Brampton Factory

DCX has stated that the new Challenger would be built in its Brampton Ontario assembly plant in Canada.

I researched the plant (nothing better to do) and found that its production capacity is 968 cars per day (19,360 per month). The factory employs 3,500 employees and uses 507 robots.

The plant is situated on 270 acres and has 3 million square feet of floor space.

Click on the following website address to see a photo of the plant where your new Challenger will be "born":

Re: Brampton Factory

Brampton is the same plant that manufactures the LX platform. (300, Charger, and Magnum) The plant previously manufactured the Concorde, Intrepid, and LHS models before being retooled to manufacture the LX lineup. There is also a plant in Graz, Austria that also handles the production of the 300 and Magnum (300 Touring wagon-Overseas markets where Magnum is not carried)

Re: Brampton Factory

The following aricle appeated in the globeandmail.com concerning a slow-down in production. Especially interesting is the quote concerning a production start of April 2008 for the Challenger and 30,000 units.

New car may not save shift at Chrysler

GREG KEENAN
Globe and Mail Update

The Chrysler Group is expected to dole out a gift to its Canadian operations next week, but may couple it with grim news in a restructuring plan for its North American operations that could wipe out as many as 10,000 jobs.
The unit of DaimlerChrysler AG is expected to announce that its Brampton, Ont., plant will build the Dodge Challenger muscle car — but that may not be enough to maintain the third shift of production at the plant, sources said Monday.
The Challenger will come on stream in April, 2008, the sources said, but its small volume of about 30,000 vehicles a year is not enough to offset a slump in demand for the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum made in Brampton.

“They could probably get away with two shifts right now,” said one source familiar with the Brampton plant, which employs about 4,200 people. Eliminating the third shift would wipe out about 900 jobs.

Re: Brampton Factory

Brampton workers rejected a company proposal, on February 19, that asked them to forfeit $115 per week in return for the contract to build a vehicle, dubbed ‘Product X’ for purposes of the vote.

However, Ward’s learned the vehicle is the Chrysler Imperial sedan, and production is targeted for 2010.

Had they approved the deal, as recommended by CAW leaders, Brampton workers also would have ensured their plant would remain on a 3-shift production schedule past 2009.

You have to wonder what impact, if any, will this have on the Challenger production for 2009?

Re: Brampton Factory

Well, it might help if the pertinent DCX "Big Whigs" think of an idea very quickly to unload their mass of vehicles that are sitting idle in a Midwest parking lot[and not getting any newer]and possibly other locations; such as a huge price gash. Breaking even is at least better than what's happening now.I don't know what DCX makes off each model. I know that Ford makes approximately 15 grand off their Explorers , which retail for about double that ! I'm not sure of the response if DCX cut prices by $4-5000!Heck, they could even announce a huge Dodge Spring Clearance sale ? Also, I wonder how all the DCX stockholders would feel ?

Re: Brampton Factory

In the lastest labor news:

"DaimlerChrysler AG is playing hardball with union workers at a Brampton, Ontario, plant who refused to accept concessions that included a pay cut of $115 a week and the outsourcing of janitorial jobs, Canadian Auto Workers officials said Wednesday.

The carmaker has told CAW leaders it will not alter the proposal rejected last month by workers at the suburban Toronto factory. And unless union leaders can convince the workers to change their minds, Daimler Chrysler will halt plans to invest $700 million that would have landed the assembly plant a new, unidentified vehicle beginning in 2010, the CAW officials said."

Also, in an allpar.com post, one poster said the following:

I know an engineer working on the Challenger launch and he says they were considering building the Challenger in China."

Wow, if this happened you would have a Chinese SRT with a Mexican engine (Hemi)!!

Well, if the Challenger was built in China, it most likely would be more profitable for DCX. Most of us may have a sort of queasy feeling thinking that our/their Dodge Challenger, an American icon would be from China ; but if made well ! Oh good grief !! I mean just look around within 10 feet and you'll find something that's made in China..seems most things are these days some quality/some not ! If so, maybe it'd be called Chery'allenger !!! They just may have some models ready ...

Not a bad looking car. Looks alot like the Mini Cooper.

Yesahh--I noticed that too. I like the Hornet's style too...I just noticed "It's Eyes & Eyebrows" : on the back side of each side mirror ! I see other eyes too, but those are the neatest. .. What a wonderful insect ! !!
