Can a 295/40/20 fit on a 8.5 wheel?

I recently bought some 20" wheels and I took it down to discount tire to get tires. The representive told me that I can fit a 295/40/20 on the back and be just fine. Is this true? Or will I rare my tires out fast

295s will fit, just not on an 8.5" wheel. You really need a 10" to 11.5" wheel to run 295s.

I said the same thing but atleast 3 different discount tires told me I could they would be able to fit on a 8.5 wheel. That's why I wanted to see more advices before they talk me into something wrong

I'm surprised they said they would do it, most tire shops, even my local Discount Tire, won't install tires on unapproved wheel sizes for liability reasons. The tire manufacturers specify approved wheel widths for each tire size they produce, installing them on unapproved wheels is not only a safety liability but also a warranty issue.

Many have squeezed a 295 tire on a 8.5" wheel. However, it will not perform properly and will wear excessively. Not advisable.

A rule of thumb, dating back many years, allows for a maximum of a 2" differential between the rim width and tread width. A 295/40 x 20 tire has a 10.6" tread width. If you subscribe to the 2" differential, I can't imagine 1/10 of an inch would make much of a difference. Certainly a larger rim would be better, but I think the 8.5" is workable.

Is there a way to recalibrate the TPMS to account for the greater pressure you would end up running with a wider tire? I would really like it if I didn't have to worry about checking them the old fashioned way. I know it's lazy but it also seems stupid to have the TPMS working for the front tires.

That formula doesn't work as well on the newer low profile tires, the shorter the aspect ratio the closer the tread width has to match the wheel width, 295 tires are 11.6" wide so there is no way you should mount them on 8.5" wide wheels as that is a 3.1" difference and the tread is going to bow out in the middle.

Why would you run a higher PSI with wider tires? PSI should be the same. I run 32psi cold (38-39psi hot at the track) on mine, same goes for those with much wider tires.

Sounds logical.
