Challenger Competition- Good for Us

The Challenger will be getting some steep competition come January and that can only be good news for those of us looking to buy a Challenger at that time.

Yesterday, Bob Lutz (GM Vice Chairman) has revealed plans for a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine estimated to be around 260 Horse power; a 350 horse power V6; and a 400 hp. V8 (L76 6.0 L).

In addition, 8 months after the release of the V6 and V8 Camaro, Chevy will offer a convertible model.

It has also been rumored that a Z28 model will be produced to top the Mustang GT500 and the Challenger SRT by late summer/early Fall of 2009. Supposedly, it will have a supercharged LS3 engine. This engine will produce massive amount of hp and torque- in non-supercharged form it already matches the SRT by producing 430 hp. and 424 lbs. torque.

Dodge better come out with that 6.4L pretty soon or we will be left in the dust!

How about a supercharged 6.4L 'Cuda!

Re: Challenger Competition- Good for Us

I just saw a review for the Pontiac G8 this morning on a local news TV channel. It was given high marks for fit, finish, handling and power.

It is more refined than the Challenger but also less expensive...

Re: Challenger Competition- Good for Us

Competition is always a good thing. Anything that causes Dodge to build better and more powerful Challengers and forces down dealer markups is fine with me.

If Chevy can come up with a 350HP V6, surely the V6 Challenger owners-to-be deserve something comparable. And if a Camaro Z28 is indeed in the future, I have to think Dodge will feel compelled to ready a 6.4L or do something special with the 6.1.

Re: Challenger Competition- Good for Us

You know the GM competition is a good thing. I like the fact that they are beefing up the power in their cars to meet or exceed the Challenger. Doesn't matter to me though, as they still cannot get the styling right. The G8 looks like a FWD car, lame cabin forward design with a hood you can't see from the drivers seat. The Camaro, looks like Knight Rider was reborn wearing a bowtie, at least from the front. I have given up on GM, as long as Dodge is willing to produce the RWD, long nose front end cars with some muscle, then they have me as a buyer.
(should I let my secret out, 20+ years working at GM dealerships)

who would compare a 2 door to a 4 door? if someone were interested in the G8, they would compare against the charger. wait till dodge drops the 6.4 in and offers better trans / gearing. you forget that the g8 in the answer to the LX line - but dodge is moving on to the LY and that should put them back on top.

I find it funny that every time a company ANSWERS what Dodge has put out, they are the innovators, but they really just had played catch up.

It will be a good time for muscle car maniacs any way you look at it.

Also, when the Charger came out people blasted the idea of a 4 door full-sized muscle/performance car... Isn't it nice that Dodge took the lead?

I agree, competition can only make thinks better for everybody. Whether you want a Challenger like us or a Camaro or both, the prices and competition really will bring back the muscle car days of old! Where RWD and big wheels and powerful V8's will tear up the road!! Let it begin!

Thumbs up Re: Challenger Competition- Good for Us

Well, that why I suggested that the Challenger get the V-10 from the Viper. As it will always have more weight than the Camaro and/or Mustang. Yet, they don't have anything with the shear power of a large displacement V-10. Even if it was available in small numbers. It would at least give Chrysler bragging rights..............
