NASCAR UPDATE: (12-7-2007)
(Busch series will be Nationwide series in 2008)

NASCAR Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash

Balash also said plans call for the Nationwide COT to be rolled out in all races in 2009. Nextel Cup teams ran the new car in 16 races this year, with the older version used in 20. The Nationwide cars also will use a different body style, with a higher hood and shorter deck lid. Manufacturers are still deciding what model to use, though it appears likely Ford will run a Mustang, Chevrolet a Camaro and Dodge a Challenger. Toyota likely will stick to the Camry, sources said.

Balash said the new rules package will likely be announced in January.

Balash said all four manufacturers have been involved in the design of the new car. The car has one more round of wind tunnel tests before NASCAR can lock down the ¹09 rules, Balash said. Balash said the new rules package will likely be announced in January.

So....."Looks like very likely we will see Challengers in Nascar in 2009"

I can't stand Nascar anymore. It's not about the cars; it's all about corporate sponsorships and "hunky" drivers that appeal to the female fan base. Back in the old days, the cars were closer to factory and the drivers had some character.

Yes, I tend to agree. As I've said before, there are way too many cars on the track, too many ad/company stickers plastered all over [aka today's pro ice hockey rinks/boards ],and they all appear to look the same !! Unlike the cars of old :

Re: Challenger NASCAR - Hmmmmmmmm...

Yeah, greed and political correctness (i.e., no more "Winston Cup") ruined Nascar. It did the same thing to Indy Car, which has become a joke. You've got all of these talented short track drivers around the U.S. who can't get a ride in a big-time circuit. Meanwhile, rich South American playboys are taking over our sport!

Give me King Richard and Buddy Baker over Jimmy Johnson and Carl Edwards any day!

Chevy won't use Camaro as Nationwide COT

By Lee Montgomery - Associate Editor

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Chevrolet will not use the Camaro brand when the Nationwide Series goes to the car of tomorrow, sources said Thursday at Daytona International Speedway.
Richard Childress Racing built the new car for General Motors that has been tested in the wind tunnel. The current version is an Impala – the same as the Sprint Cup car – but that could change to a Malibu.
NASCAR hopes to go to a COT for the series in 2009 but has yet to announce definite plans. Only Dodge, which will use the Challenger, has announced its Nationwide brand for the COT.

It was originally thought that the Camaro would be used by Chevrolet as NASCAR moved to a “pony” or “heritage” car design. But those plans changed before the Chevrolet version was built.

Re: Challenger NASCAR - Hmmmmmmmm...

We'll never see a Challenger in NASCAR but what about as an Indy Pace car?

Re: Challenger NASCAR - Hmmmmmmmm...

I'm a big fan of nascar (bigger fan of NMCA,NMRA,NOPI,NHRA/Drag racing) and would love to see the new stang, camero, and challenger "headlight/taillight" stickers on on the nascar bodied cars.

With that being said go Dale JR!

The stang's, camero's, and challenger's (factory bodied cars) will stay in and represent in Drag Racing as they have done in the past. I prefer it that way anyways.
