Re: Challenger weight

Weight ruins every aspect of a car.

They need to ensure they do everything possible to keep the car under 4,000lbs, the further under the better. Otherwise it will need all the power it can get to stay ahead of the new Camaro, and existing muscle cars like Mustang Cobras and 6.0 GTOs.

Re: Challenger weight

Mostly safety related weight, but more soundproofing and luxury stuff like power seats add lots of weight too. Over time everything tends to gain weight unless a major on-going effort is made to stay the same or reduce.

Are you sure about the Charger weighing 3300 lbs ? I thought a Charger weighed more than a Challenger; I guess on looks alone ! ! Anyways, a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with the 426 Hemi /4 Speed Pistol Grip /with rear drums weighed in at 3801 lbs.. .and could attain 146 mph and a 1/4 mile - 14.1 secs. !

Re: Challenger weight

Are you sure about that weight? I looked it up on another website just to check and the numbers were much different. It gave the weight of an R/T convertible as 3500 pounds and a V8 R/T as 3395 I think. That's close anyway. The Challenger was a porker for that day compared to the other pony cars but light by our standards.

Well, that info was exumed from ' the Supercars.com ' website; so I would somewhat assume that that info was gotten from some type of reliable source, but I or we'll have to look further. Mr. D.J. most probably would have the correct and accurate answer,as would Ted from MoparSupercenter and/or Vanishing Point! Refer to this link . http://www.supercars.net/cars/424.html ...The designation 'Challenger' was programmatic: the 1970 Dodge challenged the Mercury Cougar, the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. The R/T version (R/T: Road & Track) Special Edition with vinyl roof shown in this photo was powered by a 6.4 liter V8 with 290 hp as standard; the most powerful, optionally available engine for the R/T Special Edition was the seven-liter Hemi V8 with 425 hp. This engine powered not only the Challenger but also the Super Bee, the Coronet R/T and the Charger R/T – and was optionally available in each case. Through its leading role in the movie 'Vanishing Point', the Challenger R/T, of which just under 20,000 units were built, became a cult car.
