Do clutches require a break in period?

For organic street discs we recommend breaking in the clutch for 200-300 miles with mild engagement such as stop and go city driving prior to racing or spirited driving. Race copper ceramic discs usually only require a few hard slips to lap in the surfaces prior to normal driving or racing. Do not overheat the clutch during the break in period.

DO CENTERFORCE CLUTCHES REQUIRE A BREAK IN PERIOD?

Yes. It Is Recommended To Properly Seat In The New Pressure Plate &Amp; Disc Assembly To Assure Good Clutch Performance. Centerforce Recommends 450-500 Miles Of In Town Stop And Go Type Of Easy Driving Before Applying Full Power. If Your Driving Consists Of Mainly Highway Type Use, The Break In Period Should Be Longer Than The 450-500 Miles. If The Break In Period Is Not Properly Followed, Clutch Life And Performance Can Be Sacrificed.

Sounds like normal driving to me.

the clutch is made by SPEC, get with Tim at DCX Depot he can hook you up with one. it feels MUCH better than the stock setup. it takes a little getting used to, as the light weight fly wheel makes the rpm's drop a little quicker than the stock. so it requires a small amount of extra throttle to take off from a stop. other than that, it is very streetable.

ditto, but i guess WestxSRT10 knows more about this than everyone else. so maybe we should ask him if thats normal driving

the clutch has worked out very well. the original deal i had with them was to just resurface my fly wheel, and swap the material on the clutch to their higher perf material. this would get me by until the new unit hit the market. after they started manufacturing the clutch, they would send me a complete kit, and i would swap it out myself. all of this was because they thought the manufacturing process would take much longer than two weeks. but they managed to build the unit in less than two weeks and had it installed for me. under normal circumstances, i like you would prefer to install it myself, but if figured they were the pro's. needless to say i was very happy with the work they did. it really performs great.

the kit in my car is basically the same setup they make for the 08 vettes.
as you know, it is very hard to take it easy for 500 city miles, but it was well worth it. i havent had a single issue with the setup. spec asked me to beat on it, and if i had any issues at all they would replace it (given that i followed a good break in period). so i have tested it many many times, and not one sign of a slip.

Sorry to hear about the Clutch problems MoonDog. I have 2600 miles on mine, I did not exactly take it easy the first 500 miles on my car. I got on it a bunch of times , WOT and red line shifts, 2 small hole shots (only 2 do to the wheel hop) . I just think you got a crappy clutch. Or a poor surfaced fly wheel. These clutchs like any other part is massed produced probably in some 3rd world pit. Your bound to get a few junkers sent thru. Let us know how the new one is. I would also insist that the flywheel be sent out and resurfaced. That would be a must in my book.

"proper break-in or not", a $45k muscle car like the challenger, driven by a responsible 40+ yr old guy, should NOT have a fried clutch after 1,250 miles!!!!...even if he gets on it occasionally while its "breaking-in"(????), STILL shouldnt happen....I've put over 6k miles on my '06 GTO(tremec 6spd) with no problems, and i dont think i should have to "upgrade" an SRT8 clutch for street driving!!

Its the Moon Dog Showwwwwww

I had the same problem, did a little burnout with 300 mile on the car
and I smelled the Clutch.I even took it to my Local Dodge dealer and they thought it smelled like the clutch.
But the car rides great and when I took it to the dealer a week after.
They could not replace a Clutch without Chrysler permission(they had to call chrysler up}
Chrysler said its not a problem with the clutch, the smell will go away in a few weeks.

Yep the smell went away after two weeks and never came back.

But if you have other problems then the smell, then I would worry a tad.
if its only the smell then I would not worry because it will go away...........
Good luck and don't listen to many of these so called experts from this site.........JT

I dig ya JQ... It's a little choppy when released so I think I will go with the dealers call on it. They said they will replace it, but I HATE having anyone work on my stuff. But it's free under warranty.

On the subject of "break-in", I installed a centerforce dual friction clutch/pressure plate with a hays flywheel in my wifes 72 demon 340 and we've driven the crap out of it without any trouble . Oh yea that was 3years ago. Break-in my a**! Just don't slip it and it Should work fine. Sounds like more of a parts issue rather than "Break-in"
Just my 2cents or is it more like .0005cents in todays market.
