Question Drive it or Trailer it?

There is a good possibility that I may buy my Challenger out-of-state. I, however, was concerned that driving for 5-6 hours at a constant speed of 60-70 mph would be bad for the engine break-in. Most manuals say vary the speed for the first 250 mph.

Tonight, the SRT engineers were on the SRT Cherokee forum. I asked them if it would be okay to make this type of a drive with a new 6.1, or should the car be trailored.

They responded as follows: "Take an easy cruise, it should be no issue. No WOTs please."

Well...it looks that you guys will be seeing a new Hemi-Orange Challenger SRT driving north on I-95 in January 2009!

Well we are gonna drive the crap out of ours, it is gonna take like 6 months to reach 250 miles anyway. Cars are ment to be driven anyway.

Re: Drive it or Trailer it?

He is asking about how to drive it for the break-in period. very valid question. The new vehicles i have owned wanted you to vary the speed for the first 500 or so miles. I would probably go by the factory recommendations, meaning youd be better off towing it home.

Re: Drive it or Trailer it?

Rt 17 goes from Georgia to Norfolk. In Norfolk you can pick up Rt 13 which will take you to just below Wilmington. By then it should be broken in. Get on 95 and let it rip!!!!

Sounds like a helluva first date!

Re: Drive it or Trailer it?

It's going to have a 6 speed right? You should be able to cruise at 80 mph in 6th gear and have that be a perfect break in for the car. Constant starting shutting down of the motor, high revving, those sorts of things are bad in the first 500 miles, if I understand it correctly.

I can't imagine what it would be like being one of the first few people to have a Challenger, and the looks you will get out on the road, awesome stuff!!

Re: Drive it or Trailer it?

What does the manual for the Charger SRT 8 say? I have a Charger SXT and it said that the break in period was 250 miles. Not very long. That is why I want a car with the lowes miles possible. WOT in short bursts was supposed to help with the seals. Everybody says something different.

I also heard about WOT being good for the seals. However, the SRT engineers say different. I will go with their advice because they are the one who designed the 6.1 Hemi.

I have a 06 Charger SRT8 and broke it in driving up and around the 50-65 MPH speed over the course of the first 300 miles. After about 500 miles I WOT it many times and now it has 10K miles on it and running perrrrrrfectly.

I'm now, number 1 on the dealer pre-order list who gets hot cars quickly for the new Challenger. Keeping the Charger SRT8 also.
