I knew it was going to happen, I didn't know when or where, but I knew it would. And today it did. I had just finished washing the car and was driving back to my dorm. Saw there was a detour on this road I take all the time, took the detour. The road was torn up really bad, they had been installing a waterline or something. Anyways, there were massive ruts in the road tire width apart and heading up hill, small road, didn't see the manhole cover that was a good 5 inches higher than any other part of the road. BANG! *Exhaust gets 20x louder* pull over, get out and check, its exactly what I feared, I broke a cutout off...wonderful, just what I was wanting to deal with today. Currently sat in the muffler shop, doubtful they'll be able to fix it, probably just have to weld it shut for the time being and I'll have to order a new one. Ah well, that's what I get for lowering the car.
Sorry to hear this happened.
Usually they spray the raised manholes florescent pink around here to show them more easily. I'd try and have whoever is doing the road eat your repair bill.
Stuff happens. My son hit one of those "raised" manhole covers and tore a hole in the automatic transmission pan in an old Oldsmobile. Lost all the fluid.
I don't know how it works in your state, but in CT, if you hit a pothole and lose a tire or a rim, the state will actually reimburse you.
It's a bit of a PITA, but there is a process outlines on the DMV website here. It is, however, WAY easier if you have a police report from the incident.
I drag mine when I have a passenger, but ripping one off would be bad. I am trying to find a way to move mine in front of the center muffler but need to find a short muffler.
Like the above poster mentioned I'd put in a claim with the city or county (if unincorporated) for reimbursement, if they leave a road open they have to make sure it's safe to drive on without damaging your vehicle.
Had a friend who was riding his motorcycle on a road trip and came across this crew repaving the highway.
It was full of loose tar and pebble crap, he had nowhere to go so he had to ride through it.
Ended up ruining his chain and got all inside the hub of his wheel ect......
He put in a claim with the state and they reimbursed him for the cost of new parts he needed.
Ouch . Just the noise from hitting that would have hurt. All the money we pay in taxes for these road repairs and work . Maybe they could do a better job maintaining the roads dont you think. That should have never happened hitting a raised manhole cover. I would have went nuts.>
I did consider asking the city or the construction company to cover the costs, but the costs wont be to bad, the main annoyance is the time Ill have to spend doing something that I already had done. Plus asking the government to pay for this "frowned upon" part on my "frowned upon" exhaust because I broke it off on their manhole cover seems a bit off to me :wink3:
