Re: Fortune Mag:Backlash Begins

Isn't the Challenger as much a Halo car as anything? Something to get people into the dealership to ogle out, but walk out with interest in say, a Caliber which maybe they hadn't considered really buying before? Also, it is a low production car, based on widely used mechanicals, it isn't much of a risk. Now if this was a ground up effort, or they were aiming for 200k plus a year, i might think they are crazy, but neither is the case and it makes a good business standpoint as it increases LX production, uses widely avail LX parts, and serves as a halo to bring foot traffic into dealerships. It has a good business standpoint, just a bit over this guys head. Cerberus knows it isn't going to save the company, but it's something to get the name out there. Now with the hornet on it's way and the Caliber and Jeep Patriot selling better and better each month, that is a little help. Of course they also realize they are going to have to get their act together and are redoing the interiors on the Caliber, Compass, Patriot for 09 and the Sebring and Avenger are already getting badly needed upgrades and refreshes for 09. This guy has tunnel vision on only 1 aspect and one vehicle and it's not like they dropped everything to pour money into the Challenger or ignored the other things that needed fixed. The Challenger has it's place, as does the Mustang and Camaro.

Re: Fortune Mag:Backlash Begins

I am actually willing to bet that you won't see a lot more changes on the challenger. No 6.4, no cuda, very few if any special colors.

This chrysler is very, very different then the one from three years ago. They can produce the exact same car for 4 years and sell them out every year. There is a reason why you see the viper and other models get killed off. Right now the company needs high volume, not halo.

Re: Fortune Mag:Backlash Begins

Seth, you are probably right regarding the model changes, but that does not mean they don't need cars like this. As was posted earlier, low volume cars create a buzz and foot traffic into the showrooms, which in turn translates to sales of other cars. Again, the Challenger needed very little cash to bring to market, since it is based on an existing platform. Had it been a car from the groundup, yes this would probably have been a bad move.

Should Chevy kill the Camaro?

As far as the Viper, sales have been declining, but it was a Halo car at a time when minivans were the rage, do you think it was a bad idea to bring to market?

Oh well, guess I am not missing much then.

But where will they hang'em;not around their rear view mirror ,right ? At least in Illinois ,I believe it is still a violation to have anything hanging from there, yet I see plenty of people doing this[as well as no front plate, and too dark a tint on front and front side windows..all violations] but don't hear of cops enforcing!
