Question Gas/Electric 5.7 Hemi

Chrysler Group announced today (April 30, 2007) that the Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen SUVs will have a "two-mode" hybrid gas/electric 5.7-liter Hemi. Chrysler promises a 40% improvement in fuel economy in city driving.

A hybrid Hemi...what will they think of next?

This will probably be the last fossil fuel muscle car era. Anyone a Rush fan? Red Barchetta may come true. http://www.geocities.com/altheworlds...ED%20BARCHETTA

Bad place for batteries, especially if they're looking at Li-Po's for they're hybrids

Personally, I don't understand why they don't just used the MB Bluetec diesel instead of fawking around with all that hybrid bs.

Re: Gas/Electric 5.7 Hemi

Yeah, I heard about this on NPR last nite. Apparently, the gas mileage is gonna go from 13City/18Highway up to 18City/24Highway... They claim about 40% increase... come on! what a waste of a hybrid engine. You can get an extra couple miles, big whoop. Thats sick. A hybrid is supposed to be more enviromentally friendly and supposed to give you great mileage. This is just as bad as my parent's Explorer and any other SUV out there already.
Diesel would be a better way for this car.

However, if they do do the hybrid thingy, purchasers could always contact Hymotion, our company in Toronto, that swaps out they hybrid batteries and installs our A123 Plug-In battery in its place. Allowing you to get 100mpg+ on current Prius and Insight hybrids. I'm sure that with this Hemi Truck Hybrid, it could prolly do about 60-80mpg.

Actually, i would kinda like to see this hemi dropped into a Challenger. That would boost the mpg up on that sucker without dropping in performance. I wonder if that will ever be an option, i would love to see it.

Re: Gas/Electric 5.7 Hemi

The electric drive technology of a hybrid is well proven, but it is not the enviromentally friendly answer that some people would like to believe. Just the replacement of the batteries alone will eliminate any savings of energy or other resources. On the other hand, electric transmissions (motor instead of a geartrain) does have advantages for performance, like allowing the engine to stay at its peak power and better traction control, while allowing better fuel economy when being driven easy. Plus, there could be tax incentives to help offset the high initial cost of hybrid cars, I doubt if most people would pay a big premium for hybrids otherwise.
