Hemi 426 on American Muscle Car TV

Interesting episode. They took some of the stock big block boys of the Muscle Car era and instead of running the cars on dyno, they hooked up the engines directly to a dyno on the crank. These were all stock motors that could be bought off the showroom floor. It was purposely geared to not include race/crate engines only.

The engines tested were:
Chevy 409
Ford 427
Pontiac 421
Hemi 426
Chevy 427

The Hemi was rated @ 425 Factory HP and ran away with the gold. It was dyno'ed at insane numbers at the crank. Something like 820 hp and 689 lb. ft.! Can you imagine trying to manage that much HP with the steering & suspension technology back then?
I have driven a few Muscle cars and they are not easy to drive when compared to modern cars.

Silver went to Ford with their motor rating something like 637 hp and 554 lb. ft.

All cars were producing over factory ratings. (No surprise)
Showed footage of of cars running each of the engines. The Hemi equiped car was just insane to watch. Got me excited since I shall own my first Hemi soon. Actually I take that back. I (or should I say the wife) already have a new Commander with the Hemi option.
But it's the wifes truck and she would kill me if I ever peeled out with it.

Definitely worth watching for the enthusiasts. Next air time on Speed: Sun, May 20 9:00AM

Re: Hemi 426 on American Muscle Car TV

I have done hours of calculating juggling formulas and such, and come up with this theory: If all of these cars were to balls out accelerate in the same direction for 7 hrs. and 23 mins., the earth should counter-rotate enough to send us back in time to March 4, 1970 so we can order a Hemi Challenger conv. just the way we want it for about $5,248.79.

Hmmm... No Buick 455 Stage 1 or Chevy 454 LS 6.
Or 440 six pack for that matter.

Re: Hemi 426 on American Muscle Car TV

I thought that too.

They commented at the end to watch for future shows on the same subject covering many more motors...

no hemi ever made 800hp from the factory, not even the 68 SS cars. would be interesting to see what modifications were made to the engine to get that hp rating though.

lil fyi, i have a mag with a photo from 1964 showing a hemi on the dyno. it made 464hp with the factory manifolds. i forget what the torque was. anyhow, the hemi was underrated but not as much as people thought. they respond exceptionally well to bolt on mods however, and 500+hp on a stock internal 426 is a walk in the part to do.
