So, since I took delivery of my 392 SRT the range would display roughly 410 miles when I dumped in a full tank of Shell V-power. I always drove in the default ‘Street’ mode. Well, hanging around here reading the bad influences of your posts (good posts btw) I saw how some folks would drive in ‘Sport’ or ‘Track’ modes. So, of course, I try this habit out for size. WHOA… Major difference. She even sounds more beefed up with the resonator delete in these upper modes. But then I noticed that her range is significantly lower… Less than or right at 200 miles on a topped off tank. And her range numbers drop quite fast now. This even occurs while in her more timid ‘Street’ mode. But in ‘Street’ mode I noticed her range stayed steady for a very long time around 152 miles on Sunday although the fuel gauge shows right at or just below ‘F’ .
I reset her fuel economy monitor but this improved nothing. I filled her up but the range was still right at around 200 miles. Now I’m just waiting for her fuel tank to be empty enough for the range to read ‘Low’. Then I’ll fill her up with more V-power and see if this resets the range to ~400 mi..
BINGO... I thought of that but didn't want to try it until more knowledge (as yours) advised it. Thanks Yellow. I'll give this a go and let you know how it pans out.
Haha, nice! I am definitely interested in exploring these modes myself and comparing fuel economy to my '11 6-speed. I had no problem averaging 27mpg on long trips and could make the ~430 mile drive from southern CA to the SF bay area on a single tank. That drive did involve hills and whatnot, too.
Out here in the midwest I should be able to drive forever on the freeway. The hard part is staying out of the throttle.
Yahoo, the mpg drops to like 8 mpg in track mode.. That's wild. But I assure you the feel of the car and performance is worth the drop. Your cheesy smile will become... KRAFT cheesier IMO...
Ya hear that guys? I wasn't expecting V6 gas mileage from a 392. I was just not liking how the amount of fuel in the tank wasn't matching what was actually being reported.
The purpose of this thread was to discuss this discrepancy and get some feedback on your experiences. This was in hopes that someone could explain why. I thank those that chimed in with theories of average economy against the different modes. This does seem like the case according to run last night (I will get to that update soon). Along with the information I was fishing for I learn that I should drive a Prius when I'm certain I've been running SRT's longer than most of you. Buying fuel means nothing to me. This was my position even when we were close to $4.00/gal. Meanwhile, my cars spend 6 weeks at a time without being driven when I am working over seas, but thanks for your concern. I also learned in this thread that my bold and colored letters are too much to deal with. Fascinating. I've followed this practice over 10 years on many many other forums. The only other person that ever complained about fonts, bold and coloring was a girl. Anyway, for those who stayed the course with the topic here's an update...
Last night because of a wild hair I took her out on an approximate 100 mile dash from my house around Beltway 8 (a toll hwy loop that goes around Houston) without filling her up. I started with half tank. Around the reported 87 mile range I noticed it raising gradually up to 99 miles. I was in 6th gear @ 85 mph for most of the drive. The fuel gauge lowered as normal. Now the gauge and reported range miles began to match better IMO.
I literally haven't used street for more than 2 miles since i got it. the range is around 185 per tank 93. i guess its nice to know the car can actually travel,
It won't. The range calculation uses a past mpg refill table, not the current mpg calculation on the center readout. To work the range back up, you would have to drive several fuel tanks, on the highway, to get the history table populated with several tanks of high mpg.
Range is not an instant readout, for example switch from Track to Granny mode it will take many gallons for the range to build up. If you really wanna high numbers jump on a hwy and cruise at 55mph in 8th gear. IMO range is indicative of past driving habits, not current.
I think the only time my SRT is is Street Mode is when I first start it up.
I go straight to Sport.
In my 77 TransAm 6.6L, I swear I could actually see the fuel gauge move when I was driving it hard.
When I first started driving the SP the MDS was kicking on, and off. I couldn't figure out what the heck it was at first. Then I hit the sport button, and knew immediately what it was. I can't feel it in my RAM like I can in the SP. The SP is a real slug when MDS kicks in.
I wish there was a way to get sport mode to automatically come on when the car starts.
I've owned both the 5.7 and 6.4. They both get basically the same mileage if driven properly...which is HARD. I bet there is a SXT owner willing to trade. This forum is a very good place to conduct this type of transaction.
If you do not want to go this route, you have options. The same CT expert tuners that "tune for more power," can probably "De-Tune" your V8.

No offense, but your BOLD and COLORED posts are a giant pain the arse to read! I actually like what you have to say, but I feel like you are always shouting it. Maybe it's just me, but reminds me of how my grandma sends emails...

Hey, what's with all the Prius hate? I owned one for several years, not a bad little car, went fairly fast if I wanted it to, got 50mpg, and was great for commuting. Then my lifestyle changed, I ended up living just one block from where I work, and I sold it to a friend's wife. She still has it and loves it. They hold their value quite well and mine was totally trouble-free in the 5 years I had it. Put in gas (rarely), change the oil, and replaced tires once. Friend's wife has had it for 2 years now and has had similar luck, except she had to replace the 12V battery. They're good cars, albeit an entirely different animal from a Challenger.
I had a Mini Cooper S for about 1 1/2 yrs. Blast to drive. It was like a jet powered roller-skate.
I've owned plenty of cars in my 61+ years, and my SRT is the most fun I've had. Who cares about gas! I have a boat that gets 2.5 MPG. Doesn't stop me from fishing.
A friend of mine is on his second Prius. He likes it but he's commented on several occasions that he rarely sees more than 40 MPG on the highway (doing 70-75). My SRT gets 30, so I think we're doing pretty well.
Besides, in a Prius, you measure MPG. Here, we measure SPG (smiles per gallon)!
I know I bought mine for SPG. I really don't mind the $42 it takes for a fill up every 250-350mi or so, depending on how hard I drive. Nothing compared to what it takes to feed my daily towing beast. Anyone worried about mpg should go get a little 4 banger import. Bad ass Muscle craves gas.
This post has me curious. I only have 600 miles on my Scat and the other day was my first Post break in Launch, which I might add was almost as good as my "first time" with Ol' Mary Jane rotten crotch. But my question is: does sport mode offer any power gains over normal mode? I suppose if the computer nearly cuts MPH range in half it does, but when I did my first launch in "normal" mode, by accident of course, as I meant to have it in sport...I noticed one, that I did not lose any forward progress to tire slip with traction control being on (correct?) and two, I think I would have slept better that night if I was able to locate my old neck brace!
Has anyone compared 0-60 times in normal mode and sport mode, if so, I apologize for my redundant query. Thanks.
No it doesn't. On pre 15s, all it does is raise the shift points.
I have to agree with those who say the bold color fonts is hard on the eyes. I do skip the OPs posts if they're in color. Just saying.
When I had a 2014 Hemi the Sport mode seemed to do nothing but kick up the RPM a couple hundred, that's about it. Seemed like a real dud of an option. However, in my 2015 SXT, man that button wakes that car up. I use it to get onto the highway and shut it off once I'm at highway speeds to crank back down the RPMs and make sure the car gets into 8th. It's a great feature to have as the car will stay in the higher RPM range and get me onto the highway much more safely. Still not a neck snapper like the 2014 Hemi was, but not bad for a Pentastar
I just tested the MPG, and range deal in my SP. If you reset the MPG the range will start going back up. I was sitting at 15.4mpg, and 218 range. Then I reset using the "Hold OK to Reset" on the fuel economy screen, and after 20-25mi my MPG averaged 25.6, and my range went up to 273mi.. I have no doubt this will go back down, though. Cause I can't keep my hands off Sport mode..
My SP has 736 miles on the odometer.
ETA: I wanted to tell everyone my range went right back to where it was before I reset the fuel economy gauge after I shut the car down, and restarted it.
I never go below 1/4 tank, so range means nothing to me.
If I'm on the hwy, I start looking for gas when I get somewhere between 1/2 and 1/4 tank.
Miles to empty (range), is just another form of an idiot light.
