I personally have always prefered the Challenger over the 'Cuda. 72 thru 74 being my favorite years. Not because I now own one, it has always been that way, since the mid 70's. I think the 'Cuda looks like a smoothed out Challenger. The agressive line down the side of a Challenger looks muscular. The 'Cuda has gills. 'nuff said.

It is all about image. The 'Cudas were Chrysler's no-nonsense hardcore performance cars. The Challengers were a bit more civilized with many luxury options (e.g., overhead console with low-fuel, door adjar, and seatbelt lights; stereo tape player; leather seats; cruise control; power windows, etc.)- similar to comparing a Plymouth Road Runner to a GTX or Dodge Charger. The cars also had slightly different dimensions:
Yeh, Noid, guess I'm showing my age! I bought a new 70 Charger RT (not Hemi) back in it's day. I was one breath away from trading for a 71 HemiCuda, but got cold feet looking at the oil puddles dripping on the showroom floor from the fine Hemi. Now I can only dream of what could have been (remember the Harley commercial from a couple years back?)!
Anyway, when I was living this thrill, the Cuda name meant so much more to me -- kind of an upgrade from the Charger. I personally didn't care at all about the looks of the Challenger back then. And, I didn't care for any of them without a big honking engine.

That is where Im at right now. I was born in 1970 and have been surrounded by muscle forever. Although I am looking for a good looking car, I am more concerned with the motor and tranny/rear gear options. I want the lightest weight, quickest, baddest hemi MOPAR available in the summer of 2009.
Just saw this posted on another site from someone who appears to be "well-connected":
"Just received word that the SRT team will be updating the 6.1L SRT8 engine with MDS!! This is a feature that seemed like it would not make it to the SRT engines due to some technical stumbling blocks, but it looks like that has been overcome. I am not sure if the 6.1 MDS will make it to some of the 2008 models or if it will be held off until model year 2009. There is some indication that it is coming sooner than later...
In other engine news, there will be another new 6.1 variant that from what I saw is spec'd for the Challenger only. Neither MDS nor VCT was listed so I am not sure exactly what this is..."
It was also reported that the horsepower of the 6.1 will be increase from 425 to 435 hp, probably due to exhaust changes.
If this is correct, we may be able to avoid the $2,100 gas guzzler tax on this engine. I wonder if this means that the 2009 Challenger RT will be a 6.1 MDS and the SRT a 6.4 Hemi?
Huh? The challenger has very distinct and actually enhanced lines down the side. The 'Cuda was the one with smoothed sheet metal.
All about where you are looking. I see the smoothiness in the Challenger at the top of the front and rear quarterpanels, and as you point out, the challenger has a "crease" along the middle.
Hopefully the MDS willbe coming to the SRT models!!

This sounds like a gift from the car gods. This option would worth waiting another year for me. But it would suck if the didn't have the option on the SRT version. In a decision between better gas mileage and better performance... If I wanted the best gas mileage I'd be in a prius.

Thanks for the info. I hate being the person who doesn't know. I just had to point out what seemed obvious to me that the charger had mor publicity to non car enthusist. (sp?) I'll be sure to do my homework on the cuda because those pics are badass.
