Just joined the Forum, I'm from Scotland and currently have a 69 Mustang but I'm considering buying a secondhand Challenger to import to replace it.
Not really sure what I'm looking for exactly what with the R/T, SRT8, SE/SXT as don't know the difference, can anyone explain and also how roughly much I'd look to pay for each?
It's tough to say what you'd pay without knowing a target mileage and the options you're looking for. Are you looking for a manual or automatic? The SE/SXT are v6 cars and automatic only. The R/T is a 5.7L v8 up until MY2015, the SRT is a 6.1L v8 from 08-10. The 08s were auto only. The 2011-2014 were 6.4L cars. What options do you want? Leather? Sat nav? Premium sound? 20" wheels (option on the R/T and SE/SXT but standard on the SRT). All of these will factor in. I would say that the R/T would be your best bet. It gets decent mpg and has good performance. The SRT vehicles average 15 mpg and with the cost of fuel in Scotland, that's a large appetite to feed. It's up to you though. I drive a 2012 R/T 6-speed and get 29 hwy and 18 city. Works out to around 20 mpg average. That wouldn't be TOO bad for you. Anyway, let us know and we will help. Only issue is that I don't know what the import duty and taxes would be like or what it costs to convert the car to make it road legal. Maybe try messaging people from this thread to attain the answers you need: http://www.challengertalk.com/forums/f67/uk-challenger-owner-s-12243/
Thanks very much. I'll drop a post on that thread.
Didn't realise the SE/SXT were V6 so rules them out, has to be a V8. I'd prefer a manual but not the end of the world. Not bothered about Leather Seats/Sat Nav etc. more bothered about the colour. Would like 20" wheels but again not a deal breaker.
If you get the manual you also get the LSD in the rear. The manuals get MUCH better fuel economy than the automatics do and they're also lots more fun to drive. If you enjoy the B roads over there, plan on setting aside $1000 for a set of adjustable coil-overs. It will make the car so much more fun to drive, and maybe a brake upgrade of some sort. What's your budget? What colors are you interested in?
Good advice, the B roads are great here so would definitely be worth doing. I guess my budget would be about $20-23k, is that reasonable?. Ideally Orange/Red with black stripes/decals, failing that black.
You could definitely do the 2010 manual for the that price. It would be an R/T. If it's a base model then you're looking at needing suspension. You will need to at least do the Mopar Stage 1 lowering springs. I would do BC racing coil-overs for $1000 and have adjustable ride height and compression/rebound. The color I would choose is Inferno red. Beautiful color.
Are you gonna have to pay import taxes and stuff? Is your $23k budget including that?
Assuming we're going R/T here, I'd get an '11 or '12 if possible, as their suspension is supposed to be better. I doubt you can get a '13-'15, so lets just eliminate that along with the SRT's.
Here are your options as far as oranges and reds go:
That's brilliant mate, thanks a lot! Great to see all those colours. Only one I'm not too keen on is the toxic orange, love the hemi and header orange, would probably be my first choice then redline/tored.
The 23k would be including import, so a fair few k would be eaten up on that now I know what I'm looking for (R/T, manual in one of those colours with the upgraded coil overs) I can make a start in the hunt (need to sell my mustang first as well!) . Is there anything I need to watch out for? Is there any known problems that crop up around certain mileages such as clutch or anything like that?
Be aware that spark plugs are going to be needed at some point. They're costly compared to other cars because there are 16 of them. The clutch, you won't have to worry about much. The factory clutches are very strong. . I hope you realize that the car you intend to purchase will have about 75k miles on it. There will be normal wear and tear but hopefully not too much. It all depends on if the previous owner did all the warranty work on the car. I wish you luck in your endeavors. Please let us know how it turns out.
Yeah I don't expect to get anything immaculate with low miles, know with my budget it's not going to be perfect. Spark plugs are no problem, happy enough if that's the kind of level of things that will need looked at.
Just throwing this out - you might want to look for an RT with the Super Track Pack option. Lowers the car about 1/2 inch and has upgraded suspension/brakes.
You're a bit limited on the sellers being knowledgable enough to list that in the ads but is something to shoot for.
