Perfectly stated and they also make noise! Had one in my 2008. Will never get one again! Funny how it "adds" value to a car! Everyone wanted my '08 because it had Nav AND sunroof/moonroof! To each their own!
Tom.
I have one and I like it, until the drain lines plug and it fills the spare tire well in the trunk with water. This is my 5th car with one. But I'd rather have "T Tops".
It exposed sunroofs for what they are: Aerodynamic drag inducing; noise creating; weight adding, water intrusion devices that are prone to mechanical failure. That being said, I really have no opinion on them myself.
I don't have one in my Challenger and personally don't want one in any sports/muscle car. BUT, did have one in our Durango and have one in our Jeep Grand Cherokee and use it all the time. Even with it closed, it adds light and gives a sense of openness relieving some claustrophobia. I have had problems with them though in practically every car they have been in!
I'm not a fan of sunroofs on Challengers, but LOVED my T-tops on my 98 Trans Am......
It felt like 3 different cars: glass tops with shades, just glass tops, or no tops!
My wife was exicted to get a sunroof on her new 2010 Chrysler 300 when we bougth it in February 2010. She/we NEVER use it! What a monumental waste of money. Obviously, I don't have one on my 2016 Challenger SRT 392 and don't miss it.
So the writer of the article wants all sunroofs banished…LOL….get a life buddy.
I love mine, it came with the Challenger when i bought it, works perfect, lets light in or I can close the liner and feels like a hard top. On hot days when cruising slow I'll open or crack it open if I like, nice tint goes with the rest of the windows and looks great with the car, and the wife loves it. Careful guys….he probably thinks anything over 160 hp on the roads should be banned also.
First thing I do when I get in the Challenger is put it in sport mode and open the sunroof. Love the open air, it adds to the enjoyment. If Dodge would have made a convertible Challenger, I would have have bought one for sure.
the only drawback I have with my sunroof is, I was going to do a Retro vinyl roof as I really can not stand the seams that run down the roof. Finding an old timer that can lead those seams in smooth is harder than it sounds.
in a truck or a Durango, sure. But Challenger? Definitely not. At least for me. I have a hard enough time fitting in the car as it is with my helmet on, while still being in a comfortable seating position (In other words, not reclined like I'm taking a nap). All of the Scat Pack 392s at dealer lots near me had sunroofs, so I had to special order.
One of the few Drawbacks, of the Challenger is it's Tomb like dark interior, made all the worse by the single choice of color for the interior- Tomb like Black! Addressed with the inclusion of the white/beige and tan with the '15 and newer car, most don't have it. Having the open light, and air if wanted is a huge Plus, and ought to be standard, with a delete option, if wanted. Factory ordered and Love mine!
Hey, thanks. I'm usually lurking now and again, but am always driving, at least on weekends! almost got the bug to trade in, something a bit lighter, better handling, with a blue oval perhaps, then drove the Scat escorting the GF home late on a back road out here. No other car like the Challenger. But....Ohio Dealer Sells 727hp Supercharged Mustangs for $40K | Digital Trends not a bad side car........ : )
the article exaggerates the weight -some did some research and determined the entire mechanism ~ 35#
On a 4000# thats negligible. The sunroof versions use a 'dog bone' rib to accommodate the roof opening [non sunroof has a straight across rib in the roof], so structure is pretty much the same.
I've had 4 cars with power moonroofs - never an issue and I use them all the time.
Ordered both Challengers with them...
