Vanishing Point

Have any of you heard about this 1971 movie which the main star is a 1970 Dodge Challenger? Its called "Vanishing Point." I figured some of you would have known being such Challenger enthusiasts, but I haven't seen a thread posted on it and I have searched the site.
I can't even remember where I heard about this movie, but anyways, you can get it @ Best Buy for $10 - I had to order it from their warehouse since its not stocked in any local stores. It arrived yesterday. Here's the lowdown.

"Kowalski, the hero of the story, works for a car delivery service. He takes delivery of a 1970 Dodge Challenger to take from Colorado to Frisco, California. Shortly after pickup, he takes a bet to get the car there in less than 15 hours. After a few run-ins with motorcycle cops and highway patrol they start a chase to bring him into custody. Along the way, Kowalski is guided by Supersoul - a blind DJ with a police radio scanner. Throw in lots of chase scenes, gay hitchhikers, a naked woman riding a motorbike, lots of Mopar and you've got a great cult hit from the early 70's."

I haven't had time to watch much. I just popped it in and scanned thru a couple scenes. It looks fairly cheesy, but what do you expect? Speaking of cheesy, I also picked up Roadhouse. Friggin' awesome 80s flick. What is better than watching Patrick Swayze as an educated rampaging redneck in a bumpkin town controlled by an evil overlord? I ask you this...

Re: Vanishing Point

that movie is legendary in mopar circles. while many of the younger members may not have heard of it i'll go out on a limb and say pretty much everyone else has. its an interesting period piece and also kind of creepy given the car Kowalski's driving really IS fresh off the lot - and not just scripted that way.

This is a 70s cult film.

Several months ago, Car and Driver magazine did a great article on the film and got the actor who played Kowalski to drive the Challenger concept car. He felt that the new car was awesome and will definitely buy one as soon as production starts.

Re: Vanishing Point

Yeah, I figured most of you would have heard about this being hardcore mopars. I was just surprised I hadn't found any mention of it before.
Looking forward to watching it all the way thru.
Apparently they were given 5 cars and totalled 4. And then a prostitute stole the 5th one. Awesome.

Re: Vanishing Point

Yeah, I saw those in the related posts below after I had posted my version of it. Strange, I searched for it before I posted to make sure that I wasn't re-posting old knowledge, and I got nothing. I post it, and 3 things pop up regarding that movie.

I watched it last nite. I have to say, it wasn't as terrible as I expected it to be. I watched the UK version. It was actually a good watch. Cinematography was actually quite good for a cheesy cult 70s car chase movie. And yes, the ending was LAME. If they wanted him to go out in a blaze of glory, they coulda done it better. You know, like the car chase thru Chicago in "The Blues Brothers".
Speaking of cool car chases, i watched "The French Connection" the other nite starring Gene Hackman and Roy Schneider. The car chase where Gene is chasing the run-away elevated train was pretty good. The "Bullit" car chase was pretty sweet as well. Speaking of which, IMDB said that "Vanishing Point" use some of the audio from "Bullit" for the car chases.

lol, I always told my friends that and they thought I was crazy, it's the part right after Kowalski tells the radio to,"Go to hell" and then peels out in the desert, and the scene they take it from in Bullitt is right after Steve McQueen almost hits the guy on the motorcycle and then has to catch up with the Charger. The best car chase in a movie that I have ever seen was in The Seven-Ups, also with Roy Scheider.

Re: Vanishing Point

I heard a rumor that another remake is being considered of Vanishing Point based on the interest in the new Challenger.
