Re: What If?

If the reviews of the 6.4 are favorable and the price increase was reasonable I would be willing to pay the higher price and wait for the 6.4.

The problem is though I expect the insurance rate jump from a 6.1 to a 6.4 may be very costly over the years and I am not sure it is worth it for a car that will mostly be driven around on the street and maybe raced here and there. Once you start getting over 400HP, you have to ask yourself, how are you really going to use that on the street and how much will more HP get me in trouble.

I am getting to old (and wise) to take to big of a chance in getting in 100+ MPH races or where I could lose my license. In fact, I am just now considering myself "mature" enough to handle having a 6.1 engine!

I couldn't have said it any better!

Re: What If?

I am over 50...and wiser (I hope!)...but I cannot resist having the largest engine... even if I have to wait until 2010-2011 model year. I have done some racing (track only), owned fast cars all my life and never had an accident on a public road (I am touching wood!). Power is like having a pack of 24 beers in your fridg...you don't have to drink them all at once and go nuts...you can drink responsively! Just knowing that you have all that power under the hood is a pleasure in itself and you can feel the power when you shift up or down even if you don't use full power. Everything else being equal, usually the larger the V8 the better the sound! I would pay more for a factory new CHALLENGER HEMI 426 than for a Vette!

Re: What If?

If I can lay my hands on a 6.1 first then thats what I will get. Heck if it is Hot Pink then thats what I will get too. Main thing is to be one of the first to get the Challenger for the Envy factor. Anyway, maybe at most 5% of the folks around you will have any clue you have a 6.1 vs a 6.4 and none of them will have breasts....well maybe man breasts.

To any women or men with man breasts out there I apologize for my remarks.

On a serious note : Does anyone have any idea what the gas guzzler tax will be on a 6.4 vs a 6.1 Charger?

Too early to tell. It is based on EPA mileage estimates- not available yet.

For an explanation as to how the gas guzzler tax is calculated, see below:

The following explains how the tax is calculated:

The Energy Tax Act of 1978 established a Gas Guzzler Tax on the sale of new model year vehicles whose fuel economy fails to meet certain statutory levels. The gas guzzler tax applies only to cars (not trucks) and is collected by the IRS.

The fuel economy figures used to determine the Gas Guzzler Tax are different from the fuel economy values provided on this web site and in the Fuel Economy Guide. The tax does not depend on your actual on-the-road mpg, which may be more or less than the EPA published value. The purpose of the Gas Guzzler Tax is to discourage the production and purchase of fuel inefficient vehicles. The amount of any applicable Gas Guzzler Tax paid by the manufacturer will be disclosed on the automobile's fuel economy label (the window sticker on new cars).

GAS GUZZLER TAX
Unadjusted MPG (combined)*
Tax

at least 22.5
No tax

at least 21.5, but less than 22.5

$1000

at least 20.5, but less than 21.5

$1300

at least 19.5, but less than 20.5

$1700

at least 18.5, but less than 19.5

$2100 (6.1 L Hemi)

at least 17.5, but less than 18.5

$2600

at least 16.5, but less than 17.5

$3000

at least 15.5, but less than 16.5

$3700

at least 14.5, but less than 15.5

$4500

at least 13.5, but less than 14.5

$5400

at least 12.5, but less than 13.5

$6400

less than 12.5

$7700

* The combined fuel economy MPG value (55% city, 45% highway) is used to determine tax liability. The MPG value is also adjusted slightly to account for differences in test procedures made since the base year, but it is not adjusted for in-use short fall. The unadjusted combined MPG of a vehicle can be approximated from the city and highway values provided in the Fuel Economy Guide and on this website by the following equation:

(1/(.495/City MPG + .351/Highway MPG)) + .15
Since this is an approximate calculation, the actual gas guzzler tax may be off by one tax bracket.

It sucks that we have to pay more money to Uncle Sam, but an SRT is still worth it!

Re: What If?

My wife hit me up with a "what if" question last night. It went like this; "What if they do build the SuperStock but it is very limited in color choices. What would it take for you to settle for the 6.1L?" Simply put, Plum Crazy conv. with a white interior, white top, and of course, white decals. I don't mean to use the word "settle" when talking about the Challenger. Anyone who buys this car won't be settling, they will be enjoying!

No one is certain yet. However, it looks promising that we will see the 6.4 in a 2008 SRT.

The one clue was that when the availability of the engine was asked during the May 16 SRT Chat Session, the SRT engineers did not deny it. They said to watch for the Woodward Cruise (this August).
