Horsepower War

We all know that Dodge set the bar high with the 707 hp Hellcat and, according to Car & Driver, is planning a second generation version that will top 800 hp. Also, the Demon (900-1,000 hp??) will soon be debuting at the New York International Auto Show, on April 14.

Chevy and Ford desperately want to be top dog and will be producing the following models for 2018:

  • Corvette ZR-1- 750 hp (6.2L, Eaton supercharger, retuned direct fuel injection and variable valve timing).
  • Mustang Shelby GT500- (probable larger displacement 5.0L, twin-turbochargers, and direct fuel injection).
It's great to be experiencing this new horsepower war, but you have to wonder when it will end?

Very exciting times in-deed. I wonder if dodge will ever address the "weight" lol, since the competition is winning in that arena. I doubt it will ever end and I'm glad. Sometimes I do wonder if the big three have secret meetings with each other and tactfully plan out how they will release their vehicles to us the consumers to get more money.

I think the market will dictate here soon. Acquisition costs and insurance will leave most people out I think. Hard for a car company to make a buck when only a few are sold/available. 700 is plenty for me to have a blast with some bragging rights. Beside decent performance, comfort, dependability and good looks are my priorities.

Dodge is doing great

Maybe they should put supercharged V10 Viper motors in Challengers.

Here are more details. The new 5.0 could make as much as 780 hp.

Good news is, as long as vehicles are moving out the door, it won't end. I hear Dodge is selling 1,000 or so Hellcats a month. On top of that, it's bringing traffic through the showrooms.

Chevy will continue to attempt to position a high end Corvette to compete with high powered European sports cars. And Ford is just looking for a little love.

Dodge actually started all of this back in the early nineties when the 400+ HP Viper came on the scene. Chevy countered with the Corvette C4 ZR1. Horsepower numbers have continued to climb since then and haven't retreated. Looks like it's time for a 25th anniversary party. Let the good times roll.
