I have a 2011 RT with ST coilovers, SP sways, & Pedders camber bushings and bump steer. Have had the setup for 10,000 miles with no issues until now. I have a really bad clunking sound from the front drivers side and went part by part and finally determined the shock has failed. I greased the sway bar bushings which is usually where the noise comes from but the sound was still there. Took it to my suspension guy who installed everything who said it's the shock for sure. It's pretty obvious because when I bounce the front of the car by hand I hear the shock making the noise on the drivers side only, not the passenger side.
I purchased these brand new from a forum member leaving me with little recourse for a warranty claim. Not too happy about these coilovers overall as they have dropped twice since putting them on requiring adjustment and now this.
Most people speak highly of these but I think I am moving on to the KW's. Anyone considering the ST's may want to spring for the more expensive KW's or comparable quality coilover.
Anyone else have this happen? Any suggestions as to what I should do or if I should try getting them replaced under warranty? Sorry for the long rant, I'm pretty frustrated!
I'm getting close to 5K on my Street Edge coils as well, I'm not too worried about this. However I am curious to know what the reason behind the failure was.
I appreciate that Kris. However, I purchased them from a forum member and don't have much recourse without the original receipt. I have the packing slip that shows the order #, method of payment, etc. and have tried getting in touch with the seller. No luck so far. I'm taking the car to Stack Performance around the corner to have them listen and troubleshoot. Spoke to them about this and they said they have seen the ST's do this in the past, something about a failed component within the housing. I don't understand the inner workings of the shock so I really can't say for sure what the problem is until I stop by.
Any other suggestions? If not I might spring for the KW V2's but my wife might leave me!
I ran them for 60k on my charger. I have them on my challenger now w no issues. I've installed a ton of the ST coilovers on different LX models and challengers. Not a problem at all.
Taking it in next week to be taken apart. Hoping it's just a washer or seal of some sort. Does not sound good but I'm thinking/hoping it's not as bad as it sounds. There is no noticeable ride difference and the front is as stable as ever.
Just dropped off the car today. Found a local company who specializes in suspension and works with KW/ST coilovers. I felt even better when I pulled up and saw 2 GTR's & and LZ1 Camaro out front. I'm able to recreate the noise and after doing so he said he believes it has something to do with the upper "helper" coil. Hopefully nothing internal. If I need a new set I was considering the BC's or KW's. Have heard good things about the BC's. Fingers crossed hoping it's an external problem that can be fixed.
Betcha it is one of two things...1) whomever installed the coil on the strut did not get the nut locked down all the way on the shaft/retainer plate, or 2) Inner and/or outer tie rod end(s) are done. LX's are known for tie rod failure within the first 30k miles (lowered or not). My 06' Charger's went within 20k and my 10' 24k Challenger sounds suspect (not lowered). I've lifted and lowered vehicles over the past 25 years and shocks rarely go bad without age on them and springs wear out and can break...but this to is with some time on them.
Just sayin...
A tip next time, I would not go on a web-site and bag on a company or their until I know exactly what is wrong and who clearly is at fault. Not trying to be rude or make light of your issue, but be fair prior to knowing the truth.
I understand what you are saying Wraith SRT. I tried to tread as lightly as possible when discussing this. I was not trying to put ST down at all. Just trying to see if anyone else has had similar issues with them.
After reading my initial post I don't believe I "bagged" on the company at all. In fact, KW has been great about this and has pointed me in the direction of a great local shop who is working with me on this.
Comments like this have happened before and people start getting really upset. With this said I'm going to take a step back from this forum for a while.
No worries on me getting upset, but the title alone is "bagging" on the coilovers and specifically the brand. You posted this without even 100% knowing what was wrong...and until you do so, was 100% wrong in assuming. I no way does a negative post help anyone get anything positive out of the brand slandered. Once again, only posting up my response so that others step back and think first before allowing there assumptions type a public message that potentially negatively affects someones livelihood. I am not trying to draw you in to a flame thread or be ignorant to you.
Back to the issue at hand...did you find out the reason yet?
