2009 GTO, Let the Muscle car wars begin!

You know they say, history repeats itself. Well that seems true of the Muscle Car wars. I heard about the revival of a new redesigned GTO for 2009 in another thread. So I did some googling. Found plenty to back that up from Leftlane news, Edmunds etc.

It's like the muscle car wars of 1970 all over again. Kinda makes one giddy if you love these cars but were not old enough to drive at the time.

One site I found really interesting. It has a picture of the 1999 GTO Concept. The body sure looks alot like the new 09 Camaro.

Re: 2009 GTO, Let the Muscle car wars begin!

Forgive me if I respectfully disagree - that GTO mockup looks hideous, I've always thought so. I still have an 04 and it looks miles better than that Transformer-wannabe atrocity.

I still say GM has enough room for 2 RWD sporty cars - meaning the GTO AND the Firebird, an idea they seem so incredibly deathly afraid of. They've got a chance to really do something great here, time will tell if they piss it away that chance or not (not holding my breath...)

I agree. But picture your typical Pontiac front end on that body and you have something like the GTO should have looked like from the start when they brought it back.

Re: 2009 GTO, Let the Muscle car wars begin!

Well it looks like Pontiac may get in the game with the G8 as well.

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/24/p...-g8-rwd-sedan/

Pontiac may get a G8 RWD sedan

General Motors' announcement last week to build the Camaro and other rear-wheel-drive product at its soon-revamped Oshawa facility is a perfect ignition source for all sorts of RWD product rumors, so let's get things started with talk about the Pontiac G8. The cancellation of the Bonneville has left the Poncho brand without a full-size vehicle, and the end of the GTO's run means that a combination of RWD and a V8 can no longer be found at a Pontiac dealer. So much for being the "excitement" division, huh? Well, that may quickly change, as Pontiac wants to build a full-size RWD vehicle on the Camaro's Zeta platform. This would provide a flagship vehicle for the faltering brand, and would likely be the sportiest RWD GM sedan this side of Cadillac's V-series (Buick and Chevrolet are also likely to be receiving Zeta-based four-doors). Such a vehicle would likely follow the Camaro's showroom appearance in late 2008.
To us, this seems like a no-brainer. SUV buyers seem to be looking to migrate to a car without giving up much in the way of size or performance, and of course vehicles like the Chrysler 300C are doing well because of this market trend. Such a vehicle would give GM a way to flex its V8 powertrain prowess, would help Pontiac live up to its billing, and should be a strong contender in that oh-so-densely-packed $35-40K near-luxury segment.

Re: 2009 GTO, Let the Muscle car wars begin!

Wow!

You know, Pontiac is over working their one designer. He sure is busy...he reached all the way back to 1984 for that design. Looks like another 1984 Sunbird...pathetic, really pathetic.

Re: 2009 GTO, Let the Muscle car wars begin!

You guys better be less worried about this POS looking idea and more worried about the reality that is the Camaro.

I work for GM and I am on a fairly good information loop.

Word around here is that the Camaro will have 420 hp LS3, and a 505 hp LS8.

And will only weight 3600 lbs. Soooo, unless the challenger manages to shed some real pounds, its not going to be in the same league as the camaro. Let alone a 500 hp GTO in the future.
