Camaro will be a no go.

One of the guys on my M3Forum is a top dog engineer/Mgr w/ GM in Detroit.. It may be old news to some but I spoke on the phone w/him last night just bs ing and he said GM made the decision very very recently to make a NO GO vote and any new rear drive pltforms. He went on to say that GM is bleeding red ink so bad so fast that there is simply no $$ to re tool the plants in Ontario where it would due to UAW crap, have to be built. It would take Billions to retool rebuild re-everything for a "niche car" . GM is trying to revamp their cash cows (i.e. big V-8 SUV's) to deal w/ ever increasing pressure from Nissan/Toyata etc. So I see today on Motortrend that GM is verifying this so pretty interesting.

Re: Camaro will be a no go.

Very interesting, although not so surprising.

There is a lot of bad blood between GM the UAW in Canada and even the Canadian government. GM had received some no-interest loans in the past to upgrade their plant in Quebec in order to maintain the production of the Camaros and Firebirds over there.

A couple years after that GM pulled the plug and justified their move by saying "We are closing this plant because we will not produce any more Camaros and Firebirds. Ever."

I believe they still owe some money to the Canadian Gov't. I also believe that they would be obligated to build the Camaro in Canada because of some deals with the UAW.

All of this is second hand information, but it would help explain the decision to drop the Camaro.

In addition, we all know the company is in really bad shape from the financial standpoint...

Maybe that will leave a bigger market for the Challenger...

That thing is ugly as sin. It would be nice to have one on the streets though...A "little something" to look at in the rearview mirror of my new Challenger...LOL

Re: Camaro will be a no go.

Fugly...they called the 68 concept poor and combined it with another design to come up with this concept. Excuse me but the orange/black 68 concept was awesome. What they released as a concept missed...by a mile. GM is in trouble because they build fugly cars.

Look at success and repeat it. If your Z06 power plant rocks give it wings and let it fly. Don't pigeon hole it. That is why the 6.1L Hemi is no longer a truck motor at DCX...and look at all the applications it lives in today!

Re: Camaro will be a no go.

I don't buy it. I don't know where all this rumor stuff comes from, but it's just that. Rumors. You can believe them or not.

Does anyone REALLY believe that GM would roll out a Camaro concept garnering rave reviews and building a groundswell of support from hundreds of thousands of Camaro faithful and then not build the car? You gotta be kidding.

They'll build it. I don't have any inside information, but I have enough common sense to know they'll build the Camaro.

Re: Camaro will be a no go.

Its a shame GM is closing plants outside Detroit in the USA where they could build the Camero or Firebird. (like Oklahoma City - where an GM official told the state early in 2005 that they had no plans to close the plant)

If theres no Camero in the future, now's a terriffic opportunity for Mopar to steal more disgusted GM fans with the new Challenger. GM's getting rid of the Camero and Firebird (and concentrating solely on large SUV's) has proved to be a huge mistake for them in hindsight.

I hope Mopar takes the Challenger Concept "on the road" to other car shows and car rallys (like Jeep has done) and get a good idea what fans want.
