GM Considers LS9 for Camaro? New LS engines?
In recent months, there has been a great deal of speculation that, assuming GM decides to produce the
Chevrolet Camaro, a high-performance model will be offered with a Corvette motor. In fact, GM's Bob Lutz has even acknowledged the possibility of shoehorning the Z06's LS7 engine into the Camaro. But according to the August issue of
GM High-Tech Performance, the automaker could go a step further. The magazine says GM is contemplating putting the supercharged LS9 engine in a range-topping Camaro SS. GM is also said to have another 6.2-liter LS derivative in the works for its full size truck lineup. (Recently, we brought you
spy shots of what could be the new LS truck engine). Lastly, the magazine reports GM is in the initial stages of prototyping a new "huge" LS-style engine with 8.3 liters of displacement and 900 horsepower. It's unclear if that engine is the LS9, or something entirely different. The source who worked on the engine said, "I don't get parts unless they're actually going to do something with them." (Recently, we noted GM registered the name "
LSX" for a vehicle engine).
Mystery High-Performance GM Engine - LS9?
Images of what appears to be a new high-performance engine from General Motors have surfaced on the web. Snapped by member 'norm' of the Digital Corvettes discussion forums, there is much debate over what these images depict. Some believe what we're seeing is the forthcoming LS9 Corvette engine for use in the "Blue Devil" or "Stingray" 'Vette. Others say's it's a truck engine, possible for a 650 horsepower Cadillac Escalade. While the Escalade-V argument is compelling, it's worth pointing out that a recent published report suggested Cadillac has no plans to create a V-Series Escalade or SRX, because it would be unnecessary and unsafe. GM Trademarks 'LSX' Engine Name
General Motors filed for a trademark on the term "LSX" on June 19, 2006, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The filing is described as relating to "engines for land vehicles." It's unclear if the trademark refers to a future Chevrolet LS-series engine, or if it's a reference to the 'LSx' term used by many GM enthusiasts to denote an LS-series engine. While the latter theory is entirely possible, the fact that the whole name is in capital letters suggests it could be something different. Currently, the Corvette Z06 uses the LS7 powerplant. Rumors have suggested a more powerful Corvette model will use an engine called LS9, fitted with a supercharged. Is it possible GM will instead use the name LSX? Perhaps a minor technicality to some, by Corvette fans will surely find this interesting.
