With the winning color being white, I wonder if those numbers are factoring in fleet sales?

Red is probably up there but Yellow would be way down. Some wonder why dealers mainly stock White, Granite, Billet and Black, simple, that's what the people want.

Those "base colors" are what your average Joe buying a grocery getter prefer. I have 4 cars, 3 of them are some form of red. The other is Silver.

Red with tan interior looks awesome!

Red with tan one of my favorites!

Anyway the average Joe syndrome applies to Challenger too, check out the 2016 SXT numbers, this is pretty representative of what's going on.

Red comprises around 10% of the North American automotive market and 8% of the world’s vehicle markets.

I think it's a self fulfilling prophesy. The dealers buy those colors because they either don't want to go out on a limb with flashy colors or it's what they THINK the consumer wants and since most people buy off the lot that's what they buy. In my area it used to be that you rarely saw a pick up truck on a new car lot that wasn't white. Most cars too. I started to believe it was illegal to sell a vehicle other then white in Arizona. The reason though, was that white reflects heat and the dealers THOUGHT everyone wanted a car that didn't get as hot in the sun. So, who knows what people really wanted, the dealer's sold white. I got stuck with many white trucks simply because that's all they had not because I wanted white. It seems to be a regional thing. You see mostly black cars in the Northeast and mostly white in the Southwest. If dealers suddenly stocked 90% red or blue cars, guess what, red and blue would become the "most popular" colors.

White / Black / Gray - Silver are the generic colors that won't "turn off" the average buyer.

85% of people buy whats on the dealers lot - and they don't have to decide on a 'color' such as blue or red (the other choices offered beyond the white, gray , black tones by most makers).

So they choose what's generally stocked.

As mjb pointed out, in different regions (hot climates) silver, white sell faster than dark colors. In areas (northern oriented) you'll see darker colors and more bright colors.

I noticed moving from No. CA years ago to the NW, there's a lot more reds and yellows than I saw in the Bay Area (predominately gray, silver, black and some white). With the cloudy weather, buyers opt for brighter colors I've noticed (when they're not grays or black).
