White / Black / Gray - Silver are the generic colors that won't "turn off" the average buyer.
85% of people buy whats on the dealers lot - and they don't have to decide on a 'color' such as blue or red (the other choices offered beyond the white, gray , black tones by most makers).
So they choose what's generally stocked.
As mjb pointed out, in different regions (hot climates) silver, white sell faster than dark colors. In areas (northern oriented) you'll see darker colors and more bright colors.
I noticed moving from No. CA years ago to the NW, there's a lot more reds and yellows than I saw in the Bay Area (predominately gray, silver, black and some white). With the cloudy weather, buyers opt for brighter colors I've noticed (when they're not grays or black).
