You're probably too late for a 2008- unless you have major $$$ and grossly outbid someone. Like most of us, just hang in there until August 2008 when you will be able to order a 2009 for a reasonable price.

The following article from the Detroit Free Press sums up the situation:

High demand expected for Challenger

09:06 AM PST on Friday, December 28, 2007

By TIM HIGGINS
Detroit Free Press

Sure the sticker price for the new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is $37,995, but good luck finding that price on a showroom floor.

Several dealers are saying to expect to pay more -- much more -- if you want to be taken seriously to purchase the new muscle car that comes out next spring.

Chrysler has said it will sell fewer than 10,000 of the Challenger SRT8s -- the first model in the return of the classic nameplate.

Story continues below

Dodge
Dodge will sell a limited number of the 2008 Challenger SRT8.
Some dealers are telling customers that only 4,500 will be made; others tell the Detroit Free Press they've been told around 5,500. The company isn't saying.

Chrysler LLC says more than 6,000 people have already pre-ordered the vehicle at dealerships across the country.

One Dodge dealer in New York already has bidding up to $50,000 on the online auction site eBay.

Other dealerships are simply asking customers: How much are you willing to pay over sticker price?

"Be the first one in your neighborhood to own the all new redesigned 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8!!" Brian Hopper of Friendly Dodge in Penn Yan, N.Y., wrote in his ad on eBay.

Hopper told the Detroit Free Press he was inspired by how prices went sky high when special editions of the Ford Mustang first came out.

"We've had a lot of calls," he said.

Other dealers already have bids or are asking for $15,000 over the MSRP.

"Every dealer in the country is going to get one, and after that we're not sure how many we're going to get. They are basing it on how many cars we've sold in the past," said Darryl Pavlik, co-owner of Colonial Dodge in Eastpointe. "I'd heard they're going to bring $30,000 over sticker."

He added, "We're kind of thinking that we'll see what the market is going to bear."

Car shopper Bob Monaghan, 60, said a dealer told him that the cars would be selling for $80,000 to $90,000. "He started chuckling and said, 'It's all for the high rollers,"' he said.

Re: Newbie from chargerforums

I just joined today. I use to own a 1970 Dodge Challenger 318 back in 1978 when I was in high school. I was the third owner. I kept the car for many years and enjoyed it very much. I use to belong to the Arizona Challenger Cuda Club and enjoyed showing my car at car many shows. I sold the car in 1993 to a co-workers son. I regret doing that now.

Re: Newbie from chargerforums

I was almost in your position and was very close to buying a SRT8 Charger a few years back. That is when I laid eyes on the Challenger concept and knew I would not be happy with the Charger once these started hitting the streets. I did not not want to take the big depreciation hit either so I opted to wait. It has been 3yrs or so now but financially, I made the right decision...

Plus now I feel mature enough to drive a 425HP car!

You sure have some patience because I don't think I could have waited that long. I would have probably bought something in the meantime.

Well the main reason I could hold out is I love my current car.
98 Pont Grand Prix GTP (Supercharged). It is a tourque monster (for it's time) and fits me just fine. I have some custom changes and have somewhat detuned after spinning the bearings on the first engine. But it still has a great custom audio system.

That and the fact that I am 43 with several bills, a mortgage and kids and I don't carry any credit card debt. I have learned to be more patient in my older years especially when it comes to finances.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you are regarding the age, bills and family situation but since we just bought a Charger last year, it will be a few more years before I can even think about getting another new car.
