Post Police put Charger charge in fleet fleet

Police put Charger charge in fleet fleet

POLICE GO TO DODGE

It's riding the boomer wave to what the industry calls "heritage" vehicles, which includes everything from the Volkswagen Beetle and BMW Mini to the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Challenger.
The Dukes of Hazzard were routinely outrunning the long, but slow, arm of the law.

That might not have been the case if the sheriff had driven a Dodge Charger, just like the fun-loving cousins' distinctive 1969 orange General Lee.

Well, now the pony has come full circle. Police forces are buying up the retro car, including Hamilton Police Services which has four new Chargers hitting the road this week. Three are marked and one, painted a gorgeous midnight blue, will mostly monitor the Linc as an unmarked "ghost car."

The brawny Charger oozes power. The shark-nose front end seems to snarl, while the big engine quietly rumbles. It's been resurrected after being out of production for about two decades.

It's riding the boomer wave to what the industry calls "heritage" vehicles, which includes everything from the Volkswagen Beetle and BMW Mini to the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Challenger.

And now DaimlerChrysler is eager to edge in on the stranglehold that Ford's Crown Victoria has on police fleets.

"Chrysler has recently launched the Charger as a police package vehicle and is really pushing it," said Dan Bowman, manager of fleet, facilities and supply services for the Hamilton police.

He says many forces have been reluctant to give Chryslers a try.

"It's been a long time since any police agencies have had Chryslers in their fleet. This Charger is an engineered police vehicle. We tried the Intrepid for awhile but they weren't very successful. But Chrysler has listened to the police industry and we're really excited about trying out this car."

Thumbs up Re: Police put Charger charge in fleet fleet

Although I've always been rather partial to a black & white unit, that NYPD cruiser looks very nice.

That is so neat to see! I wish our local Police force would sport these cars around town . When I get into the police force that is what I am shooting for.

Un-be-knownst to most, and hidden in-plain-sight, here in Dallas, on Northwest Highway at Garland Road, at Autonation Dodge, are app. 35 white Hemi Charger patrol units ready for the Dallas fleet. If you're in Dallas, you've been warned!
