Re: Suggestion for DCX: dealer markup crackdown

I will certainly inquire about this as well. I can forsee two problems:

1) customs will nail you when you import it, and you'll wind up with some sort of import duty. It may negate the benefit of buying the car Canadian at all.

2) Canadian smog requirements may not be fully compatible with some (or all) US states.

I'd be really surprised if there weren't enough issues to make the purchase not worth it. I've been told (but haven't verified) you can't even do this from state to state. For example, as I understand it I can't just head up to Oregon to purchase the car and bring it back to California. Maybe someone with some authoritative knowledge can speak up on this matter.

I live in Canada and can confirm it. Unfortunately due to Canadian retaliation measures for U.S violations of NAFTA softwood lumber decisions you can only buy Pinto's and Festiva's here to export to the U.S (HA!)

Re: Suggestion for DCX: dealer markup crackdown

Gotta agree with this thread. The amount of money to be made (or lost) based on the greed of dealers should make them stop and think. Many people simply won't buy or will be forced onto used car lots. Hopefully DC takes the opportunity to implement some anti-gouging measures before introducing the new Challenger.

Re: Suggestion for DCX: dealer markup crackdown

(Price gouging and refusal to deal)
Yea and some parts of the country are definitly worse than the others for this practice.... Points finger at west coast....Some dealerships wont even deal on msrp. And yes if we buy vehicles out of state last i checked we are responsible for the balance of the sales tax. Say buy car in oregon no sales tax take it to washington to license 7.8 % give or take on sales tax we will still pay wa state tax. And if we paid tax from another state we would owe the balance of whatever that percentage was I believe. Been awhile since I examined that option my dad did it a few years ago when he bought his Dodge truck, will get in touch with him and ask. He still made out on the deal that is how bad it was, compared to buying a vehicle in this ,Washington State.

Re: Suggestion for DCX: dealer markup crackdown

Good post Mike, The only possible thing that could keep me from buying the Challenger would be a greedy dealer, (price gouging), or if the car doesn't get made at all.

You guys should check out the above link, I read this just moments ago over on the chargerforums...
I believe that many dealers will not be getting more SRT8's unless they move the ones they have, hence they are selling them at better deals now.
Hope this takes some worry away...

Hey Everret. I believe that should be 392CI Hemi. 396 is a Cheby engine.

Re: Suggestion for DCX: dealer markup crackdown

I agree... I WILL NOT be gouged. I might may over MSRP but very, very little over.

Re: Suggestion for DCX: dealer markup crackdown

Unfortunately the car companies view their customers as their dealers. In reality the dealers are agents, not customers. The good news is that if Chrysler really wanted to, they could put pressure on their "agents" to not sell over MSRP.

What drives me crazy are these people that will pay over MSRP and then brag about it. I look at these types and think "take your ego and shove it. I could care less how much money you have."

Timely thread.
