These Chevy guys just add fuel to the fire

just want everyone to know, i own a Z28 and a Roadrunner, so i an not biased towards one model over the other. I do prefer the new challenger over the new camaro. i was checkin on the latest rumors for the new Camaro and came across this thread...

This is Tony Rapin...he hangs out on the Pro Touring / Lateral G forums...1968 PT Camaro owner....and Critical Surfaces Designer at GM and the thread is quoting him...

"Our car will be cheaper and faster than Challenger. I'll guarantee it. Everybody raves about those hemi engines that Chrysler stuffs into their cars. Show me one peice of data that suggests that engine has ANYTHING on our LSX engines. No way on God's green earth is Chrysler going to "one up" Chevrolet when Camaro debuts. The boys down at Powertrain are already talkin' sh*t. And Lutz has their back.

Corvette SS will be the best thing to happen to Camaro. At 600 ponies it'll give Camaro more breathing room for horsepower.

Also...a buddy of mine just starting working for Roush Racing. Word out of that building is Jacks gettin' in bed with the General on Camaro. He's already knee deep in the Solstice stuff and will recieve an alpha build 8 months prior to start of production... couple that with further progression in LSX aftermarket technology and you have the makings of one kick ass car to own in '09"

Re: These Chevy guys...just fuel to the fire

Well, there's definitely nothing wrong with GM making the new Camaro one powerful competitor...it's just too bad the concept looks more 'futuristic' (like something out of 'Battlestar Galactica') than 'retro'. I too once owned a Camaro (1972), as well as a Pontiac 'GTO' (1966) and 'LeMans' (1967), but whenever I think of the term 'muscle car', I automatically think of my '74 'Challenger', as nothing else comes to mind. I must admit, however, that '66 'Goat' was one 'faaast' car.

No problem, just trying to keep everything a bit more organized so that it'll be much easier to locate at a later date...thanks.

Re: These Chevy guys just add fuel to the fire

wow, they certainly seem sure the Challenger will be made. But a Grand CHerokee SRT8 went 13.3 a few days ago at 4700 lbs, BONE stock. drop 700-1000 lbs and let's see how the Challenger runs... I
know 13.3ish IS what ls1 camaros/Trans Am's run stock. hmm...

Re: These Chevy guys just add fuel to the fire

Hey I like the new Camaro too, and I've had my share of GM F bodies (still have one, as a matter of fact). But something these Camaro diehards need to realize is that even if the new Camaro IS faster than the Challenger and Mustang, that's not all it takes to survive in the car business anymore - the 4th gen F body was certainly proof of that.

There was no V8 Mustang that could beat a comparable LT1/LS1 F body (with rare exception, anyway), but the F body died anyway, didn't it?

Being the baddest and the fastest on the block isn't all it takes anymore (the same goes for the Challenger too, I'm not just picking on the Camaro).

my buddy's TA went 12.9 at SLP Nationals stock off the floor about 3 or 4 years ago. (fastest street tire TA there actually)

anyway, i've seen a timeslip on the GCSRT-8 for 13.1 somewhere, forget what site, but as far as the LS motor being better for (aftermarket) performance, I'll agree.. but how many people buy their cars for that vs. looks and comfort? We already know that the LX/LY chassis is comfortable. We don't know anything about this new camaro as far as daily drivability.. and if the last camaro is any indication, I'll pass.

Re: These Chevy guys just add fuel to the fire

What does Lutz have a handful of IOU's? With cars like the Buick Lucerne I'm sure he is going to turn GM around.
I had a 94 Z28 it was a great car till it hit 100,000 miles, then it started to fall apart.
I really don't care if their car is faster. The Challenger looks wicked sitting still!

Re: These Chevy guys just add fuel to the fire

If one car is going to be faster, it will probably be marginal or come down to drivers. I can't imagine there being too much of a gap, just because of all the media attention and camparisons these cars are going to be put through. On top of just the 1/4 mile time, I bet that a lot of comparing will come down to how well it will do on a track as well.

Could anyone explain to me why he says that the LSX engines are better than the Hemi's to be used? I don't know enough about the internal specific differences in each to really make an opinion of what that guy is saying.

Re: These Chevy guys just add fuel to the fire

....IMO,99% of Klutz's cars look dull and boring(z06excluded)over at gm,..soo they can babble all they want over at the General, about this or that on the camaro,...as their sales keep dropping and dropping, because of their boring designs!!...That camaro is soo far off from production,(if they even make it),it ain't funny!...While the Dodge Challenger is already to go,...as a full fledged production model now!!....I hope they keep giving all kinds of rumors about the camaro,...as by the time it reaches the type of look for production,(concept too far off),....our challengers will be taking all the sales,....along with the performance!
