Who Works on Their Car?

The following article recently appeared in a magazine:

"A recent British survey revealed that an alarming number of drivers couldn’t point to the most basic engine components, much less name them on sight. A similar survey performed by Goodyear earlier in the year indicates that 60% of American drivers did not know how to check tire pressure on the car much less change a flat tire if it was needed.

With reliability quickly becoming non issue and the complexity of internal systems on modern vehicle on the rise, the typical consumer is being forced to forego many services to outside facilities rather than perform the most basic service. Our question to you is do you perform any maintenance on your vehicle, or simply trust another individual to do it for you?"

I guess we are in the minority?

Re: Who Works on Their Car?

I work on all of my vehicles, if you can't do the basics you shouldn't even drive. But I do understand that not everybody wants to do an entire engine rebuild.Time, Space, and Money are very large issues when tackeling a large project, and not everyone has access to even one of those, let alone all three.

Re: Who Works on Their Car?

I do all my own maintenance. I don't pull engines and trannys anymore.

I do my own maintenance because I know it will be done right.

Also, when I get new tires I pull the wheels myself and take them to the tire shop and have them mounted and balanced. I don't trust them with my lug nuts and that they will jack my car up properly.

I've heard to many horror stories so I will do my own stuff until I am no longer able.

Re: Who Works on Their Car?

I have the Dodge dealership to everything for my Charger since it's still under warranty, but I've always done all my own work on previous cars except for the occasional oil change.
