California Exhaust Laws

Anyone here effected by it? I'm curious how that applies to Challengers that are loud from factory?
It seems some cars pre 15 were fairly quiet for a V8 powerhouse?
Are you legally allowed to "upgrade" at all or are you required to keep it as the factory set-up regardless?
(upgrade with MOPAR pts. vs. aftermarket)

Cars are manufactured to meet federal standards and state law can't override federal standards.
Factory exhaust is legal in all states.

State can override Federal laws. One example. The Federal law for drinking age was 21. State of Hawaii did not change it until 1986. It was changed in Hawaii only because the Fed wrote a bill to withed funding, untill Hawaii change their drinking age law to 21.

Hawaii wanted the $$$.

I'm more curious than anything. I live in Canada and we have loud exhaust laws in Winnipeg as well.
This law is highly debated however as it doesn't get enforced much for motorcycles.

Reading a bit more on the net its seems a decibel level is set for CA.
95db is what I'm reading.

We tend to "follow suit" here in Canada, hence my curiosity.

Cheers all!

It would only apply to modified exhaust and yes, 95db by law (it's always been 95db BTW). It's meant to thwart the "sideshows" as they call them here. Cars gather and do doughnuts and shut down streets, etc. No more fixit tickets, you must replace the offending exhaust.

P.S. No clue why Harleys have always gotten a pass. Many even set off car alarms

at NCM Motorsports park last season which has a very strict 103 decibel at 50 foot rule, a friend with a bone stock exhaust Camaro ZL1 1LE was blowing sound under power.....and that was at 50 feet, unrestricted, Bigred will blow 105ish at 50 feet under full power.....

ps also consumes 6 gallons every 15/20 minutes under full power

they've been more successful about lobbying to have a "pass". A stock Harley is fairly quiet

all the modded bike on the roads...if cars were that loud, they would have been picking them off left and right (which they did!)

it really is a double standard. If you're going to enforce a rule, be consistent about it, IMO

One of the first things I did with my 1974 Harley Sportster was to remove the factory exhaust -- quiet and about as heavy as a battleship -- and fit drag pipes. Loud but I liked that for it gave me a bit of comfort that otherwise asleep behind the wheel dumb ass drivers would hear my motorcycle.

And even today as motorcycles split lanes (which I never did and if I rode today would never do) I often hear the rider rev the engine to let the other vehicle drivers a motorcycle is nearby.

I have a mid muffler delete and got a ticket yesterday. I was cruising in sport mode in San Bruno and wasn't making noise or anything and a cop pulled up on me like I just killed someone or something. He made a big deal and made me turn my car on and rev it for him. I feel like I was targeted. Citation 27150a. I am putting my mufflers back on this Saturday and will pay the stupid ticket. Such BS.
