Dodge Challenger: Car of The Future

Quote:
Remember 2008? Of course you do; it was memorably awful. The economy was in meltdown, banks collapsed, home values dive bombed and the few consumers whose confidence wasn't shaken were those whose confidence was shattered. And into this maelstrom of economic suck and insecurity, Dodge launched the enormous Challenger two-door coupe (above). It was the wrong car at the wrong time.

The Challenger is what the GTO should have been when Pontiac re-released it. Look where that got Pontiac...

Good read, thanks for posting it A Guy.

I agree with you Gila Hemi, Pontiac dropped the ball with the 2004 GTO styling.

Chevrolet should have followed both Ford (Mustang) and Dodge's (Challenger) strong retro themes and came out with a retro looking Chevelle.

The Camaro had many retro cues, but just not enough of a real/true retro look. Especially compared to the 2005-2009 Mustangs.

The Mustang and Camaro have both moved on/moved away from the retro theme. I'm glad that the Challenger continues to stay retro, at least for the time being.

People get so worried about being on "an updated platform" with brand-new redesigned engines and transmissions, etc, etc, etc....

Personally, I actually *prefer* my cars be on older, well-tested and refined platforms with older, well-tested and refined engines and transmissions (to a point obviously).

Believe it or not, my 2018 Challenger being on such an "old" platform was actually a "pro" to me. :-) Same with the 2012 Impala that I purchased used w/19k miles on it - it's riding on a proven 2006-era platform with a proven and reliable engine/trans (300hp V6 and 6-speed trans).

I would much rather have an 'old' platform/engine/trans that has been refined over the years than a brand new platform/engine/trans that is completely untested in the real world. I specifically *don't* want the "latest and greatest". :-) I want something that has been refined over the years and known to be reliable. No matter how much testing they do "in the lab", things don't always go as planned "in the real world", where there are a LOT more variables.

Car and Driver article about the “why?” of Challengers

The article does a good job explaining why I traded in an eminently sensible Jeep Renegade for a Challenger Scat Pack.
