ZF 8HP70 Transmission

Hi folks,

New to the forum. Hoping to gain some insight from folks.

I have a 2016 Challenger R/T. Bought it new in 2017. Almost right off the bat, the transmission would down shift very harshly when I decelerated, mostly from 2 to 1, and often from 3 to 2 as well. Like, it was so harsh that the car would lurch and passengers were confused. Could feel the "clunk" of the gear shift. I took it to a dealer, and over the course of 4 or 5 visits and 2-3 months, they went through their protocol (update TCM, reprogram TCM, replace valve body, and finally replace transmission). Well, guess what, it's still exhibiting the same problems. I took it back, and opened a STAR case with Dodge, who sent a regional technician out, and he came back with "it's behaving normally."

I've just lived with it for the last couple of months since that, but I'm curious if anyone else has this issue with the transmission on this model? Appreciate any of your thoughts. If there's already an open thread on this, I must've missed it. Please let me know if there's one and I'll head over there!

Thanks!
Arash

Just out of curiosity, did you keep taking it to the same dealer? I would look into taking it to another dealer for another evaluation, if possible.

There's quite a few variables that could cause that to happen, but quite likely it has nothing to do with the transmission but could be a sensor getting a faulty input commanding a higher than normal line pressure to the transmission. A line pressure gauge and scan tool would be a good place to start. Dealers these days just check TSB and fire the parts cannon. Like the guy said contact another dealer.

There is no idiot light on the dashboard - so it *must* be "operating normally".... <sigh>.

I can't stand it when you take a car to a dealership and you get the "no problem found" line when you know *damn* well that something isn't right - especially when a dealershop tech rides with you and even they can "feel" the issue as well. But - no light on the dash = no real problem to them... I swear, most "mechanics" these days don't know how to troubleshoot a problem unless there is a light on the dashboard to tell them what's wrong.

I get it, cars are very complex nowadays, but you still need to be able to troubleshoot issues even when the computer doesn't tell you whats wrong.

I had the similar issues mostly in bumper to bumper traffic. They told me that it's normal but then they replaced the rear because it was making a grinding noise when turning at slow speeds and now the clunk is about 98% gone. It does it but it's hardly noticeable. The service rep came from Ford and she said that they were having similar issues with the 10 speed transmission. I googled it and sure enough it's out there.

I have been taking it to the same dealer. Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll schedule something with another dealer in my area.
