Called SRT8 thru 2014 when SRT was it's own brand under Chrysler Group, at the end of 2014 Chrysler dissolved the SRT brand and rolled the vehicles (except the Chrysler 300 SRT) into Dodge coinciding with the new company FCA US being formed and the 8 was dropped beginning with the 2015 models. The 8 denoted 8 cylinders as there was also a Neon SRT4.

As you may know, the 2015 cars were vastly different and redesigned mechanically and electronically with many upgrades too numerous to mention. The new Uconnect with Performance Pages, the 8-speed automatic and 6-piston brakes being among the most notable. Believe the engine was the same but it did get a 15 hp bump to 485 hp and the SRT also got electric power steering for the first time.

SRT8 was to differentiate it from the SRT4, SRT6 and SRT10. Now that all SRT are V8s, they just say SRT.
SRT4 was the high output 2.4 Turbo Neon (and later the Dodge Caliber with different 2.4 Turbo)
SRT6 was the Chrysler Crossfire with 3.2 V6 and supercharger (Actually a Mercedes AMG SLK32)
SRT10 was the Viper, and the Dodge/Ram pickup with the V10 performance engine.
SRT8 was originally 6.1 V8, then 6.4 V8. In originally Chrysler 300, and Dodge Magnum, then Dodge Charger, Grand Cherokee and finally Dodge Challenger. Then finally 6.2 in Hellcats/trackhawks.

No problem, Kind of odd to think of it, but the first 2 SRT8s were neither a Charger or Challenger! (300 and Magnum wagon), and the Challenger was the FIFTH after Charger and JGC. And the Challenger was the last SRT Vehicle added out of all of them. (but they made up for it with initial year being ONLY SRT8s)
