2009 Challenger R/T - Engine Replacement Options

5260 Views 26 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  009SRT
I have been looking through the forum and on the web for replacement options for my 5.7... I posted what I found as I was digging through the engine after going into limp mode and as I continued to dig, I kept finding more and more metal... After talking to a few local people and hitting the forums... I have come to the realization that I would be better off just replacing the engine. Does anyone have a reliable source for a replacement engine? I have been to shophemi.com, powertrainproducts.net and a few other places.. but I am curious who yall recommend because I like to roast my tires and I figure this group may be the best place to ask...

Help me get my challenger back on the road... I have burnouts to do at the Freedom Factory...

I would contact Luke at Steve White Motors. As to what you replace it with, it depends on how much tire burning you want to do!

Probably just a beefed-up 5.7 because I don't want to have to replace the trans too... I thought about just buying a wrecked challenger from copart and going that route... but... I am not confident I can do this job by myself and where ever I have the car fixed, I will have to ship it or deliver it myself because there are no hemi shops within 200 miles of my house... Stupid rural Kansas... I'll give them a call and see what they say.

So the crates are non-MDS engines and basically the same engine from a manual trans challenger as far as I can tell. Wouldn't this require modification in the PCM tune to disable MDS solenoids in the tune as well? As for a 392 crate you might also need the engine harness and enable the SRV in the tune...also the engine mounts, exhaust manifolds, midpipes, evap purge location, coolant lines (5.7 and 6.4 have different coolant hoses and radiator openings)...etc...are different so not exactly a drop in replacement...needs a little tinkering. BTW 2008 5.7 are different from +2009.

Okay... so, the 392 is out. Get a 5.7 and do the MDS delete before installing the engine. I guess you'll still need to unlock the PCM. Like the AEV delete plug-in modules, is there not a similar module for MDS? One that fools the PCM into reading active solenoids?

Not necessarily just takes a little more work then dropping in and connecting things up. If you get an auto 5.7 with MDS only to convert to non-MDS I would say just get a crate as you basically have to teardown the top half of the engine to do so. Cheapest would be a junkyard 5.7 auto but if you are going thru all the trouble of swapping engines might as well start off with a new crate so you don't run the risk of an engine on borrowed time. Just my $0.02 BUT considering it is a 2009 I would do a junkyard engine because lord knows how long the electronics like WIN module, ABS control module will last?

Wow, this is the way to go. It’s great that you can see it running. This would be a great way to upgrade an R/T with some more power, non-MDs and factory reliability.

The fastest, least expensive option would be a 345 crate engine. BUT ..... I would install a 392 cam and longtube headers. Being a 2009 you can buy a tuner and have a custom tune done, no need for an unlocked PCM like 2015+ cars. If money doesn't matter I'd drop a 392 crate motor in it.
LOL you can not purchase an Hellaphant Engine.....
And it is not street legal.

Yeah if you want to spend $7500 and already have 74K miles on it, and then have it put in which if you arent doing it, its another cost. I mean if money wasnt an object, i agree its a great option.
Rebuilding a 345 HEMI would be so gratifying! Do some forged parts with higher quality bearings (if needed) and some choice emissions edits, like MDS delete.
LOL...Sure you can $$$$$$

LOL...Sure I can...n if I did get this one off e--y who is gonna tell me I cant street it...the engine police?

Probably the best thing to do for your situation is find a close shop to do a swap.

Buy a new 5.7 crate for an auto. If the MDS is bothersome, turn it off with a handheld tuner.

'09's don't have locked PCM's, so it's less money to spend.

Best of luck.

I would get a 5.7L crate motor, non MDS, nothing more, nothing less. If you want to tinker and build an engine, keep the current engine on a stand and go through it and rebuild it while still being able to enjoy your car with the crate motor. Sounds like all you want to do is continue enjoying your car in "as was" condition.

Well you can't put in a car that requires emissions inspection. People run without CATs all the time BUT they usually don't live in a state/city that requires emission inspections. So if you live in a state where no emissions inspections are required you can install anything at your own risk.

Exactly...I run headers with no cats, but full exhaust on the street in my home state (no inspections) when not at the track, no prob! There is aways a work around. Improvise, adapt and overcome! So, I can buy one and I can put it in a car and drive it on the street, just not your street.(or state...LoL)
