Would you accept the dealer putting a short block in your 392, after they can not find a cure for a tapping sound. They got approval for it from Chrysler. I am now wondering if It would affect the cars value, because it is no loner original, and also because when selling it looks bad for some people, that at 38,000 miles the engine had to be replaced. Any feedback on this would be appreciated? What you'll you do?

i don't see the problem? if they're going to put a brand new 392 engine in your car with 0 miles on it, seems like your making out pretty good to me. When in it comes time to trade/sell, all you can do is explain what happened. If i were the buy of this used car, engines got less miles then rest of the car, it could be a plus as well

I can't see how it would hurt the value of the car. Low time engine would be a good thing for resale. If you are one of these people (I am too old to expect to see current Challengers become collector cars) who will live long enough to see the car turn into a collectable, a factory/dealer installed, warrantied engine, with paperwork to show what was done will probably not hurt the collector value.

Thanks for the input guys feeling better. I was just worried about having issues down the line with installation its not the completely assembled motor just the short block which will require a bit of work as the service advisor explained. I didn't want to have the chally in the shop all the time, and and based on the comments it seems it would be ok selling with this repair. I guess its really all up to how good dealer is.

I'd just be sure to get a the specific details on how they'll handle engine warranty issues in the future - all new warranty, special limited warranty, extended warranty, et cetera. And whatever they tell you, make sure it's in writing from them too!

How loud is the tapping?
I might would drive it until the 5 year/100k warranty was almost up and then get it changed.

The tapping sound is noticeable from at least 20 feet away. And also from the inside. Its louder than the normal tick, and it's rpm dependent. Short block is a the lower portion of motor that needs to be assembled they are going to use the rest of the parts from my mortar to complete assembly.
