2017 Challenger SXT+ | Uconnect Update Fail | Service Bulletin 08-071-18 | No WiTECH
I updated the Uconnect software on my 2017 Dodge Challenger SXT Plus with the 8.4" screen (no nav) today. It started out bad, the OS on the radio changed from the red & black Dodge scheme to a generic uConnect Chrysler silver & blue scheme. My Performance Pages disappeared, SXM radio was gone, no sound... I called uConnect, they said there was no fix and called the dealer for me to make a service appointment. (I didn't like that as a solution, so I didn't complete that with the rep.)
I read online that many Challenger auto-updates had trouble, and some people said that their system continued to update through the cell network after the initial software update. I went through the steps on the Service Bulletin again, and realized I missed the reboot on Step 17. So after a few hours I went back to my car, rebooted, and the system was back to normal! It turns out you don't hold the top right of the screen (as described in the bulletin) for 10 seconds, but rather the "X" near the top right...that did the trick.
There's still a step, number 19, that I was unable to perform. Anybody know what wiTECH is or how important it is to "clear all DTCs?" Should I go to the dealer to do this? Dunno... It seems to be working now so I'm inclined to let it go.
When I first updated, here's what happened:
I entered my VIN into the driveuconnect.com website, and it prompted me to download:
UPDATE AVAILABLE
Your 2017 equipped with the system qualifies for the following software updates:
Update 1:
UCONNECT_VP4R_US_NON-NAV_CR16.11_LALDLX_MY17
SERVICE BULLETIN ID: 08-071-18
RELEASE DATE: 2017-08-09
So I downloaded the software, and the Service Bulletin (attached here, below). I printed the bulletin to take with me to the car.
I unzipped the downloaded file to my blank, 16GB USB stick (solid state Kingston). I started my car, inserted the USB in one of the armrest compartment USB's. The screen prompt appeared immediately. Then I followed the Service Bulletin step by step:
Inspection:
My current software was at version 16.8, and I was updating to 16.11, checked in steps 1 & 2.
Repair Procedure:
Step 1: my 16GB USB stick was ready, skipped to Step 11.
Steps 11-16: went as described, mine took maybe 15 min.
Step 17: didn't do the reset completely...touched the top right of the screen, nothing happened. Exited the menu.
Step 18: I have no nav, skipped.
Step 19: I could not complete the step. It says to use wiTech to clear DTC's? Anyone know if there's a way to do this at home or how critical it is?
Step 20: The radio looked funny, dim screen, blue colors replaced the red screens. I turned the car off & pulled the fuse for 10 seconds.
When I turned the car back on, it still had a silver Chrysler logo at startup & blue scheme (instead of the red Dodge scheme.)
Then, like I said earlier, I heard updates continue through the cell network, I went back a couple hours later, correctly did the reboot...and all back to normal.
I hope this helps others! I was very frustrated with the ignorance of Uconnect support, they offered no solutions but a service appt. (easy for them, right?) Mine still wasn't normal after step 20, pulling the fuse, so I thought maybe I had the wrong software. But Uconnect assured me there was only the one download file. So maybe it's true something updated during those couple of hours? In any case, it looked more normal when I turned it on after those hours, and after I did the reboot (in "dealer mode") it was all back to normal.
If anyone knows about the wiTECH and clearing DTCs I would love to hear about it.
Cheers!
