Just a FYI. I started hearing a faint belt squealing in my Challenger last week. Swung by the dealer on Saturday(12/30) to have them look at it as I only just hit 20k miles. Belt squeaking used to be a common occurrence in older cars, but not really any longer, but figured it would just be a quick tightening of something...Wrong. After starting at the dealership, no squeak, but the sound of marbles coming from the motor.

After about 30 minutes got the diagnosis that the water pump bearings were shot. The kicker is, the tech said they have been seeing these frequently with the 2015+ models with the 392. There is not a recall yet, but could be coming, so if you hear any belt sounds or strange "marble" like noises, you may want to get it checked before it leaves you stranded.

It is common enough the parts are on back-order and I am supposed to find out today(Thursday 1/4) how long they will have my Challenger. So until then I am in a rental 2015 Jeep Renegade(it is NOTHING like my 2012 Rubicon I used to have). I was told they may have to put the current design part in and if there is a change to the part and a recall notice goes out, they will have to have me back in and have it changed out again...so now I drive a cute-ute and wait. Also, I am north of Tampa FL and it was in the 20's at my house and I miss my heated seats and steering wheel(I know I am a wuss, moved here 20 years ago from Indiana and my blood is thin)

LoL you sound like my brother-in-law. He lived in Chicago most his life and moved down to Orlando 10 years ago. He also has thin blood but it's from the increase in Margarita consumption.

As for the water pump, it is a common failure that is not just limited to the 392. Still amazes me that a car so young has a bad pump.

Its issues with the supplier that makes the water pumps. Either their machining (shaft / housing) or tolerances on the bearings don't have very good QC.

Agree. And seems to be more common at lower mileage with the Shaker hood cars for some reason.

Update, got my car back today with no issues. They replaced the water pump with a current model water pump and said there is likely a recall coming and once that happens and they get new parts I will have to go back in for another.

Hey DodgeCares(Andrea) is there anything you can share? Is there a recall coming our way? Any ideas on models/motors with the issues?

Hi George,

For the most up-to-date information regarding safety recalls and other campaigns we would recommend periodically entering your VIN here to view any recalls on your vehicle: https://www.mopar.com/en-us/my-vehicle/recalls/search.html.

Same thing has happened with my 2017. At only 10K miles the battery was completely dead one morning, took it to the dealer for the battery issue and the rattle I was hearing. turned out it was the water pump bearings, at the same time my radio went out as well. When you wait for 5 years for your dream car to have this happen it makes me want to go back to my Fords!

I had my water pump replaced on my 2016 Scat Pack at like 25k miles. I noticed engine noise when it was parked and when I opened the hood I could hear noise from the front of the engine. When I took it to the dealer they said it was the pump and replaced it. They didn't hear about any recalls but said they were seeing it on the 392s. Hopefully it's the updated model so I don't have any future problems. As you can imagine, not happy this happened on a year old car with only 25k miles. My friend has a 5.7L Ram and he also had water pump failure during the holidays so looks like it's both on the 392 and 5.7L...

My 2017 Scat is in the shop for a water pump at 4800mi. Part is on back order so dealer has no idea how long it will be, I get things happen but the fact that the pumps are on back order is a clue there's an issue that needs addressed

You can potentially add me to the list. In the last week and a half I’ve had a noticeable vibration sound coming from the engine. I thought maybe something was loose on the shaker since I took it apart to install my strut bar but the sound was still there with everything off. I can feel the engine vibrating while it’s running.

So today while going to work I hear a squeal the entire way. When I go to leave I start it up and watch for anything. It looked like the belt was getting stuck for a split second then running normal. When I got home I looked at the pulley for the water pump and there is a bit of play on it. So I have a call in to the service department at my dealer and I’ll see what they say.

My car is a 17 Scat Pack Shaker with about 6500 miles on it.

Have to stress if you hear a noise/vibration you need to get the source/location/cause ID'd ASAP.

If the symptoms are water pump related you don't want to drive your car to the point the water pump fails catastrophically. This can cost you more than the water pump. It can cost you an engine and even if the car is under warranty Dodge may not cover the engine if it feels the engine damage could have been prevented by avoiding continuing to run the engine.

Can't stress this enough: The water pump is a very critical component to the engine, as critical as the oil pump, the cam chain, etc. Just because it is external to the engine, so to speak, and pumps water rather than oil, is no reason to dismiss its criticality to the engine's continued good health.

Yeah it’s gonna sit for now until I figure something out with the dealer.

If you hear something like this...kinda of sounds like a frog croaking.

It is the pump

In fact, I recently noticed some noise and pulled the pump on my 25 kmiles RT and saw the impeller started to hit. In all fairness though, I am running a SC and thumb racing tensioner.

Happy to report good news. I dropped the car off last Saturday. They confirmed it was the water pump bearing. They replaced it and I got the car back today and all is well.

Wow I'm almost at 48k miles and I think my water pump is going bad again. I have an appointment on Monday but the pulley is so loud that you can hear it with the hood closed.

Well, I finally cut open my old pump and here is what it looks like.

Sectioned housing where the bearings press into.

The impeller, shaft, seal and bearings. Can't believe how rusted the shaft is where it seals up the bearings. That is the only spot it rusts that bad, everywhere else is nowhere near as bad. This pump had maybe 50kmiles on it.

Since I believe I hear the same croaking sound, is this issue associated to a certain build lot of 392's? As well, who is the supplier of the water pump assembly to Dodge?
