I confirmed the rear axle has a whine to it between 54MPH and 59MPH on acceleration and cruise but not on deceleration. I have read others having this issue but did not see anyone with a 2011 SRT8. Thought maybe it was fixed for 2011.

So I have to try a new dealer for:

1. Alignment that supposedly cannot be done (per my old dealer)

2. Axle whine

This new problem (axle whine) is just too much!

Wow, you are really having some issues with your new ride! Was just chatting with the wife about your rim problems.

Which brings me to another point/curiosity - my brother is an ASE Certified Master Mechanic with years of alignment experience. He has taught me many interesting things regarding alignment both 2 wheel and 4 wheel. Now I will not dispute that Bear Alignment systems may not have the specs yet for a 2011 car but ANY competent alignment specialist should be able to at least rotate your steering wheel back to where it should be! If the steering pulls to one side which in turn causes the steering wheel to be off center then all the alignment tech would need to do is evaluate what readings he is getting on his equipment. If the toe numbers look close and the camber numbers are out of whack then adjust the camber a little and the problem should get a little better. It's really not rocket science so the guys at SWS must be some real gems. Wish you lived closer to here so i could direct you to a real professional to at least fix one of your issues.

I have no doubt that when I find a competent dealer the alignment will be corrected. The new problem with the axle whine is another matter. I do not want a vehicle let alone a 46k vehicle that whines at normal cruising speeds.

Just bought mine this weekend (2011 srt8 auto) and driving home from the dealer I noticed it. I figured it may be settling in. And I didn't notice it the next day. But now that I hear about others experiencing it, I'll keep an ear open for it some more.

Otherwise, I am pretty damn pleased with this car.

I am going to tell my NEW servicing dealer about it but it seems like this is the norm. Meaning, replacement axle will probably have the same issue especially since the issue has been around multiple years. I do not like the whine and it will cause issues down the road since the unit is too tight.

Sorry, being this is a 392 thread, I figured you were talking 2011! If you have 4:56 gears with no whine that doesn't sound normal to me!

2011 Auto's have 3.06 gears :)

And yes there is some whine but I am not going to the dealer.. My C5 had whine too (Getrag rear also) it never changed, it was constant from day one, wasn't very loud. I will keep my ear on it.. if it gets louder it will get replaced.

WOW, never would have guess they kept the 3.06 ratio for the auto!

They made up for it with crazy low ratios in the auto tranny. The auto and manual have same HP as well as 1/4 and 0-60 times. Although the autos are easier to launch which yields a real world faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

3.06 is the natural consequence of the 1st gear ratio in the 5-spd. If it had gone any shorter, then 1st gear would have become uselessly short. It's already on the short side as you can only put a mere fraction of Hemi goodness into it w/o smoking your launch (either that, or Dodge should just come clean and say these Hemi Challengers are vastly under-tired for rear traction, as they come from the factory).

Randy,

No doubt they could use more rubber.. when the auto's are barking the tires from 1-2 sometimes even 2-3... Hemi Goodness makes it possible! :)

The numerical gear ratio has little to do with whine. Whine is affected by how the gears are cut, pinion depth/pre-load, and the back-lash setting. Yes, my 392 6 speed with 3.91 diff whines slightly on decel - it doesn't bother me.

My 2011 392 auto has the whine too. Im getting the fluid changed to get the break in crap out of it to see if it helps. Its still not bad enough to get fixed. I know i could get one put in that is much worse than the one i have now. My 2010 Mopar 10 has a slight whine and the 2007 SRT8 i had did have a slight whine too but not as bas as the 392 I have now. The 2010 R/T Classic I had did not have any whine.

Remember Dodge heat-treated and case-hardened those parts for the 392 application. Maybe that had an effect on sound.
