The battery light will illuminate when a problem is detected with the charging system, e.g. the voltage spikes higher than the car’s electrical components are designed to handle, or the voltage dips too low to be able to continue adequately powering all the necessary components.

Those are just two examples of what can cause the battery light to come on, but they are the most common things to cause it.

Adverse events like that will usually set a DTC in the PCM, and those types of codes may not illuminate the Check Engine Light like you’re used to seeing when trouble codes are set. Have someone pull a list of any stored codes in the car’s computer and zero in on any that deal with the electrical/charging system.

It is likely no coincidence that the problem began after the aftermarket lights were installed. Unhook their main power wire and see if you can cause the problem to happen again. If not, you know the wiring is the first thing to check.
