So I’ve found a 2011 R/T Challenger I really like and called the dealership and set up the appointment. The head of sales manager I talked to told me the car was in good condition and all that but mentioned there’s a check engine light for something that has to do with the exhaust. It’s got 65k miles on it and had the catalytic converter replaced on it in 2019 at around 60k miles. I recently posted about this worried that it might not be a good thing but someone commented that it’s not really a big deal. After the dealer told me there’s a check engine I’m worried they might be related. Anyone with experience or advice? I have an OBD II scanner but the dealership is 3 hours from me so I’d like to have an idea of what’s going on before I get there, if possible. Any response is greatly appreciated
Honestly if they don't know them they should be able to get them. Even if they have to take it to an auto zone or pep boys or which ever auto parts store is in the area to get the codes.
Have a 2013 R/T Plus with the electronics convenience group. Should this have 12v power to the jack in the center console? Mine doesn't seem like its working. Sent from AutoGuide.com App
Chally he mentions he has a scanner but the car is 3 hours away that's why I suggested he have the seller tell him the codes instead of driving 3 hours to get them. [emoji16]
Honestly I would pass. 2011 had issues/recalls with WIN modules going bad after battery died or was disconnect, timing chain guide failure, leaky alternator diodes...ect. Weird that one cat would be replaced and not both.
Dealership is not suppose to sell a car with the check engine light on. Its actually illegal for them to sell like that. More then likely its emissions related. Is there state inspections where you live?
I was about to post this. Years ago a buddy bought a Camaro SS that had been worked. A couple days later he got a check engine light and discovered it had no cats. He called the dealer and they said oh well it's yours now. I called on his behalf and said either you install cats or I'll have the state come chat with you for bypassing federal and state emissions laws. They installed factory cats a few days later.
I'd walk away from the car. Dealer can't be bothered to address the issue that is causing the CEL means it is "expensive". My WAG is it is converters (again). But regardless I'd not buy the car.
As someone touched upon you can research emissions in your area to see if there is any restriction on selling a car that is manifesting an emissions problem. But I would not trust this dealer to fix the car right and then stand behind it.
Three hours away is a real obstacle to getting things taken care of. Dealer would just wear you out.
Walk away. First rule of used car buying is there is always another car. You want a car with no stories and this one with a CEL has one.
You’re right. I’ve decided I’ll pass up on it I’ve got the next two months to find a car and I’d like to have something without any worries. Thanks to you and thanks for everyone else for all the tips
