Yesterday (11/23), Chrysler Group LLC, announced they plan to invest $843 million in the Kokomo, Indiana, plant to manufacture more modern transmissions. $300 million of which will used to immediately begin building the new 8-speed auto transmission.

Chrysler also announced that they were developing a 9-speed, front wheel drive, transmission, as well as a new 6-speed with a dual clutch.

9-speed! Wouldn't a CVT make more sense than 9 separate gears??? They could add one more and buy off the shelf from Shimano!

Yeah, it sounds funny. A 9-speed transmission?? Huh?? But then you realize that those little four bangers rev a lot higher than we do.

Well, growing up and living in Kokomo, this certainly is great news. Kokomo is and always has been a great Muscle car town. In the 60's and 70's we had over 20000 GM and Chrysler employees in Kokomo(out of a total population of 50000). You can emagine the number of muscle cars. It was like woodward Ave. every nite! Anyway, keep buying those Challengers(and even Camaros for that matter). We all thank you!

Have any of you guys yet seen the "D-Drive" infinitely-variable transmission some plumber in Australia came up with?

It's fully geared, and can seemlessly go from reverse, through neutral, and on to the top-end ratio all while the input shaft maintains optimal RPM.

Also, supposedly it can easily be scaled to any size of application. Freaking awesome. I wonder how long until we get to see it put into real use somewhere.

Video: Is Steve Durnin's D-Drive the holy grail of infinitely variable transmissions?
