So this morning while I was in my car I noticed a heavy clicking noise coming from underneath my gear console, possibly in my transmission.

When the car is in Neutral or Park, and I press down on the brake, or release the brake, the noise occurs.

The car drives fine and shifts fine. I have a 2016 RT Shaker Plus Auto-8.

My suspicion is that there is something wrong with the Solinoid Valve but I wanted to ask the community before I took it to the dealership this weekend.

The car is only 2 months old and has less than 3000 miles on it.

I apologize for the poor sound quality, but if you listen carefully, you can hear it.

Thanks so much for any help!

I don't have an automatic, but the sound you're hearing is likely the interlock that prevents the gear shifter from moving out of park unless you press the brake pedal. I'd bet it always made that noise but you never noticed it before.

Thanks for the reply!

Actually I was able to check out a coworker's 2015 RT this morning and see if his made the same sound. He also has an A8 and there was absolutely no clicking noise or thump whatsoever.

The video doesn't do it justice, but if you put your hands on the walls of the gear console (underneath the drive stick) you can actually feel a thump that coincides from the noise.

After comparing the sound with my coworkers challenger I really do feel that something is out of place.

Dealer will be able to take a look and fix it, some cars have noisier solenoids than others for whatever reason but it is from the lockout and isn't a transmission issue. Good luck!

Hi Miles Greene!

I would recommend taking your vehicle to a Dodge dealership for diagnosis, they will be best able to further assist you. Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Since its under warranty, it wont hurt to have the dealer check it. Let us know the result. I didn't notice it in my '12RT but my '14 RT had that noise and now my '12SRT has it and its even louder than the '14.

old thread, just wondering if op got it diagnosed.

i have that noise, and can actually feel it. Its when the car is running, sitting idle and i press the brake theres a thump under the shifter. I just figured it was the safety lock allowing gear shifting.
mine is 16 rt shaker, auto trans. 12k miles.

Hi kymmenentuhatta,

Is your Challenger equipped with the DRL, and have you requested them to be enabled at your dealership?

It is not currently equipped; but I have not checked the dealership yet because I need to make an appointment; and I'm afraid of how much they would charge me.

Can you send me your VIN in a PM? Not all vehicles can have the DRLs activated, so I'll check for you. Not sure about any cost associated with it, so your dealership would have to answer that one.

Mine also

Mine just started doing this when I ran out for lunch today. 2015 R/T A8. Shifted over to manual mode, and when I went to upshift I noticed it seemed to be sticking some. At first thought maybe just because it was cold out. Noticed once I got to my destination that when I would push the brake I would hear and feel a tick inside the shifter. Was not there before. Be curious to know what it is. But will likely just get it to the dealer.

As mentioned at the beginning of the thread, the clicking is the park solenoid that prevents the vehicle from being shifted out of park unless your foot is on the brake. It is unrelated to your "sticking" problem, which isn't clear if you're talking about the shifter itself sticking or the trans not shifting right away while in manual mode.

Just mentioned both issues together because it was the first time either of those things have happened, and they happened all within a 3 minute drive. Just seems funny that it's not connected somehow. Car shifted fine, just kind of felt like the shifter was sticking a little bit when it typically moves smooth and easy. I am pretty in tune with my vehicles. The clicking was not there prior to that drive today.

The solenoid is like a gate, it keeps the shifter in park if your foot isn't on the brake. Press the brake pedal and the gate opens, letting you shift out of park. Once you're out of park the solenoid does absolutely nothing to or for your shifter's movement, so the solenoid noise and your sticky shifter in manual mode are unrelated. Being cold, it's possible the grease in the shifter assembly has become thick/stiff and the shifter doesn't move as smoothly until/unless it warms up a bit.

The dealer may replace the solenoid or they may say it's normal, but if it bothers you then it's definitely worth having them look into it.

Had it looked at and the dealer has ordered a new shifter. Says they have seen this a few times. Thinking the solenoid is sticking some and not quite getting back to normal position which is causing the tick when pressing the brake and possibly the shifter to feel like its sticking when in manual mode and upshifting. Either way, will be replaced tomorrow.

Part was replaced and it's back to normal. There is still a slight click which is normal operation. But mine was certainly louder and in manual mode was clicky when it wasn't previously.
