You can get an MDS 6.4 Cam for +$200

And performance springs are $5 a piece ($80 total)

I don't think you would have to swap out the MDS lifters as they are the same used by the 6.4. Although I would still probably deactivate MDS in the tune.

So all you need is timing seal, oil pump tube seal, valve cover seals (seals not really necessary) and the valve spring tool which can be had for ~$150.

Total would be well under $1K. But it is tedious work.
I'm actually looking up prices for all of those parts right now. I'm intrigued.

Can you help point me in the right direction for an affordable valve spring remover tool? All I'm seeing is "Hemi specific" tools that cost about $200. Also, any other parts you can think of that I would need, or is that it?

Bought mine from snap on.

As for parts, can't think of anything else.

I just priced it out, and the parts to do a 392 cam swap is only $323. lol
Well don't forget the tuner and tune. HP tuners is $300 ($550 for pro version), unlocking the PCM is $250, two credits is $100 (if you want the trans tuned it's like another 4 credits) plus whatever a tuner charges.

I already have a Predator--it's the old one, but it still accepts custom tunes. Just trying to figure out how much a mail in tune would be. A local shop does custom dyno tuning for $400. I just don't want to keep paying $400 every time I change something. I can't afford to do everything all at once. lol

I may be doing a 392 intake manifold swap eventually and a couple other small things.

If you can find SP or SRT exhaust manifolds you would have one budget power package. Granted it is a lot of work but if you do it yourself saves you some significant coin.

Yea, I actually bought some used JBA shorty headers, a used R2C CAI, the tuner, and a used 2800 stall converter all for about $500. I’m a good deal finder lol

I am trying to decide which route I want to go after my car is paid off. I was quoted 12k for a "Big Daddy" cam at OST Dynos. I am basically looking to get rid of MDS, have a nice idle that does not require a Torgue converter and get my car into the mid to low 12's. Is this possible? Would love to go into the 11's N/A (sleeper).
12k for what?

To add more to the confusion, theres actually Two camshafts labeled for each stage, hence theres actually 2 Stage HRT camshafts, very similiar, so close in profiles..
Im trying to research

To do a budget 392 cam swap in a 5.7 just requires the cost of the cam (~$220) and mopar performance springs (68277306AA is the individual part number at $4.33 each ~$70 total). Although the spring tool cost from snap-on is about $150. So you can see the hardware is pretty inexpensive. Although I would highly recommend getting comp cam push rods which are better quality than stock.

Yup, and the required gaskets. Comp Cams just came out with their own tool that’s $130, so I bought that.

Only gaskets I really needed was the oil pump o-ring, timing cover and a small tube of RTV. If you plan to swap the springs while the heads are in the car, might be worth to get a couple of spare valve keepers from the dealership as well. Once they hit the floor they tend to disappear like cockroaches.

Where did you find that valve spring price and application? Best price I’ve seen is around $10 each. This really sounds like a nice budget project.

Being a newb to these engines and cams that are semi-adjustable timing wise( I’m an sportbike engine builder/repairer so no stranger to valve timing), do most good tuners take full advantage of cam tuning? Are most factory 6.4 cams installed in 5.7s full valve timing control or are limiters needed/used? Why would aftermarket cams require limiting the range of movement? Aren’t they leaving some hp/tq on the table by not taking advantage of it? How do you go about checking piston to valve clearance in one of these things? I can’t imagine not being to know exactly how much clearance there is. I think I’d really be sweating it the first fire with a new big cam, praying everything is where it needs to be so there’s no contact. Just some random thoughts...
