So I just changed the differential oil on my 2014 Dodge Challenger and when I took off the drain plug it had the greasy stuff on it which I wiped off, but it had black stuff in the middle of the bolt which wouldn’t come off, but when I would wipe it, it was black on the towel. Seemed like the only way it was coming off was if I chipped it off with the end of a screw driver or something. Was I supposed to take it off? I left it on thinking it was something that helps collect the smudge/metal shavings

thanks guys

The drain plug is working as designed. It’s magnetized to capture small wear metal from routine use.

Hope you didn’t damage the magnet...

It’s normal. The black on the towel when you were wiping was just microscopic bits of metal that was clinging to the magnet. Next time just get most of the residue off via a towel and put her back in. No need to chip away.
