MotorWeek tested the e39 M5 and said it was the greatest sport sedan of all time. I think that statement still stands historically in terms of the model's impact, even though faster cars have come since then.I remember reading in European Car magazine about the magazine's guy boiling tire smoke off the tires and 400 hp, which seemed a lot back then.:laugh2:

Classic 5-er - No Bangle

Ignition think the Chevy SS has finally surpassed the e39 M5.

I had an E39 540i and it was so easy to drive at "go directly to jail" speeds and not realize it. Very quiet and smooth highway cruiser. For the time, that 4.4 NA motor really was amazing. IIRC it was rated at about 300 hp which was pretty damn good in 1999!

Yes, the 540i had a choice of automatic or 6 speed stick, whereas the M5 was manual only. They were great all purpose cars, a gentleman's musclesedan. The Alusil V8 was reliable, and sounded like a V8 from yesteryear. Nice sleeper styling too.
