Electric turbo?

10630 Views 23 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  A Guy
I just heard from a friend about Torque amp electrical turbo. The kit is relatively cheap (2.5k $) and seems to be easy enough for a child to install. The ease of install and removal is what catches my attention since boosting n/a engines is illegal where I live.
Dyno results from different vehicles are presented on Torque amps website with significant hp/ torque gains.

I doubt many challenger owners are using electrical turbos because of more effective alternatives and more liberal laws in the US, but does anyone know about risks of using this product?

WOW Illegal in Sweden. Liberal Mecca?

Are you gonna be a criminal and put one on and let us know if it works?

Being declined by the car inspection would require disassembly, registration inspection with original documented from manufacturer which is hard to come by. The vehicle would be standing for months and with costs of atleast 2k $. Its not the law that keeps me from buying a RIPP s.c, it's about economical consequences.

Searching for information from people with experience is way cheaper than buying and trying...
I'm pretty skeptical, The v6 already makes 300hp, and that takes alot more flow than a 120hp chevy. results (if any) would be marginal at best IMO.

Currently, there are no electric superchargers that flow enough for a car engine. It would take more than 12-14V for that spinny boy to move fast enough, on a 48V system tho yes it could work. If u want temporary power try nitrous or make a homemade electric supercharger from a 40V leaf blower, people may look at you funny with the second option tho.

The battery in the Torqamp box is 48v 8Ah

It's charged by the cars alternator, so even tho it's 48 volts after one pull you'll likely drain it completely and have to wait a bit before it'll create any boost. And while it's not creating boost it's just gonna be a big restriction in the intake. It was also designed for small sub 2.0L engines. I'm very interested in the idea of an electric supercharger myself and its one thing I hope I can design myself one day after I graduate, but this torqamp isn't fit for a challenger. On a very small liter European car, where torqamp is from, it may be a cool little mod to do for fun but it's gonna hurt more than help on our cars.

Now I'm imagining an electric supercharger on a 48V car with a smaller liter v8. And maybe a KERS on top of it. Big power and good fuel economy with a power curve that can be easily manipulated with just tuning how the supercharger spins at certain rpm and throttle input. Like a turbo/twin screw/centrifugal all in one.

Oh I'm not debating the efficiency of this system, it says for 1 second of run time, expect 10 seconds of charging time. It's basically a short time on demand device as it stands

Right. I'd say 1 minute of boost before needing to recharge is enough for spontaneous red light racing. I dont go WOT often enough to need permanent boost ^^
The air restriction of inactive turbo is probably going to cost HP though...

Guess electric turbos just haven't developed enough, which is kind of surprising given the potential demand for such product.
Don't sound like a good idea to me for what it costs. $2500 isn't cheap for something that don't work very well.
I'm gonna do the captain obvious thing here.
If you want more power, why didn't you just get a V8?
The guys on Roadkill did a power-adder experiment using gas powered leaf blowers as the makeshift 'turbo'. IIRC, it took about a half dozen blowers to do anything noticeable. The full episode is up on Motortrend on demand. Teaser and article.

We already have a power-adder that does that. It's called... "Nitrous".

If I made alot more cash,I would buy an SRT. 2 extra shifts each month to afford my SXT speaks for itself:) Gas costs 80 $ to fill up the tank... high taxes.
But I still think the SXT is an awsome car :)

Whoa ....where do you live?
Sweden. The TAX is almost 1 $ för 1 litre gasoline 🙄 So mpg matters alot

Thats the total price of a Litre of gas or is that just the tax on it? For example our is by the Gallon with tax included in the total price. Here where im at its around $2.49 a Gallon for mid grade.
1 US Gallon = 3.78 Litres.

$1 tax and 40 cents for the gas itself. So about $1.4 / litre. This price is considered low because of corona, last year it was over $1.7. Also consider that the price of the car itself is higher in Sweden.
SXT $35
SXT + $40k
R/T over $55-60k

Imagine $20k mods on the SXT 🙄

Wow, thats pricey. And we think our gas is high. That's higher than ours even when it was at its worst @ over $4 a Gallon.
Wonder why your gas and car prices are so high? Got my RT used and it was less than 24K and its a 2018, got it 7 months ago.

Why the high gas taxe: Officially a way to make people drive less to decrease CO2 pollution. Which is retarded bullshit ofc, a country with 10 million inhabitants wont do any global difference. Just a way to tax ppl.

Car prices are higher because of... taxes.
Well be happy you don't live in Germany ... we have even higher gas prices ;)
The price of "free" healthcare...
As for the electric boost device (I can't call them turbos), I watched and read about those a while back. They are interesting, and actually a quality product that works. But man, not cheap.
