I'm just over 900 miles, will probably cross 1,000 over the weekend.

I checked the owners manual, and there's nothing in there about having it done after the first 1,000 miles, but I've seen people on here do it. Did I miss something in the manual?

You will find nothing in the manual about doing the first change early but many still do. Don't think it is as critical now as it used to be, I did mine at 600 miles and oil looked good. Gonna do my rear axle oil now, with limited-slip needs to be done way more often than without.

Really, a waste of money and "good oil", but I did mine at 3k miles..............................it just made me feel better! lol

Guess that I felt if the engine went "bang" early in life, I tried my best not to have this happen, and it wasn't my fault. :)

I'm changing every 5,000 miles on my 6.4L Scat Pack so my first oil change will be in 4,000 miles. I do it every 3,000 miles on the 2009 R/T but that car has conventional oil.

I never let the oil in my vehicles (including the motorcycle) get dark, and certainly not black.

For the original poster, some people will change their oil sooner and some will have longer oil change intervals. You will have to make your own choice as to what is best for you.

Note that if you drive the car hard (like racing a lot), you should change more often.

Per the manual is fine, but I did mine at 736 miles because I just feel better changing mine after breakin. I also figure, with the factory installed filter torqued to 70 lb/ft, it's better to get that off sooner than later as the longer you let it sit on there overtorqued, I bet the harder it is to get off and the more the gasket might stick. Oil looked "brown but not black" when I changed it at 736 miles. Also, I don't know what oil they use at the factory (Pennzoil?) but I like to have Mobil 1 0w40 in mine.

Chrysler recommends to follow the maintenance requirements in the owner's manual.

Its always a good idea to do the first oil change at around 1000 miles. There's a lot of assembly lube in the motors, plus just crap in general from a new motor. I have rebuilt many engines and we always do first oil change between 500-1000. After that I go 3k for dino oil.

I think these days this subject is over-dramatized.
Heck, my Toyota calls for oil changes every 10,000 miles, including the 1st!
I just performed my first change on my '14 R/T at 5k miles.
I plan to do it each 5k miles.
Why 5k when the book says 6k?
It's easy to remember.

That is the exact same logic (and mileage) I did on my '06 Charger, and plan on doing the same to my Challenger, just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything in the service schedule about a 1,000 mile oil change.

If I planned to have my oil changed at the dealer, I'd probably let it go until the recommended interval. My reason for changing it at 700 miles was to get the factory filter off as soon as possible. My logic being, the longer that filter sits on there torqued to 70 lb/ft and going through repeated heating/cooling cycles, the harder it'll be to get off. Since I plan to do all my oil changes myself, it was just a bit of insurance to make future changes easier. With all changes after the initial one, I plan to change it when the EVIC tells me to change it.

Just changed the oil in my Scat Pack at 1,000 miles. The oil was dark brown... it looked like oil at 5,000 miles.

I believe a early oil change is important and beneficial for a new engine. After the initial break in, you will have some debris in the engine and the factory filter isn't the greatest.

I used the Royal Purple filter for the 6.4L. It has extremely impressive reviews and ratings. it uses a synthetic filtration media and is really well built.

The filtering efficiency was among the best tested.

I used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40, as I believe this is the best synthetic oil currently on the market.

I will change again at 5k and then every 5k.

I've seen some scary stuff, like sand (from the block mold, I suppose), aluminum flakes, and what appeared to be just plain dirt come out of new engines, so that alone makes me want to change the original oil out fairly quickly. My car sat on the lot of months, and only had about 28 miles on it, so there was a lot of "goop" inside the oil filler cap, so I had it changed immediately after I got it. I drive far enough every day that water build up, and the "goop" is just a memory. I change it every 3 months or so, I'm not locked in that I have to do it or I get all freaked out, like some people do if they don't get it done right on schedule.

You will find that everyone has a different opinion on the first oil change. I changed mine at 2,500 miles and do so about every 5k which means Spring then right before Winter storage.
