I noticed that the front outlet next to the shifter turns the device hooked into it on and off when you start the car and turn it off. Is it safe to plug a radar detector in there? I have a Beltronics Vector 995 and it started acting strange. It cycled through the settings and showed a volt count where it should of been showing radar detection. It also had a "C" showing.

Who uses the new Bel STI driver? Is it worth the money? They also have a GPS based detector that alerts you to gps speed trap points and various ticket cams.

Don't use one. I figure that I don't have a chance with my "DY". You can see it coming at you for miles!

It's funny, but on two laners, I've met State patrolers, and even got "thumbs up".

I always keep it 1mph below the posted speed while cruising.

Keep mine plugged in all the time and have not had any issues. The one receptacle in your console stays on all the time.

You can also set your plug to have constant power. It's Tip 128 on the 100 Challenger Tips and Tricks:

Dash Power Plug Modification
Modify dash power plug (cigarette lighter plug) to always be powered like the one inside the center console.

The dash plug below the Radio is tied to the AUX power system and will be powered off at about an hour after you shut the car off.
To make the cigarette lighter power connector be "hot" even with the car off go to the PDC (Power Distribution Center) Fuse Box in
your trunk and open it. (It's located in the spare tire well.)

When you open the fuse box, look on the inside of the fuse box lid and you will see a numbered layout of the fuses.

Look for Fuse #18 with letters "IGN" (Ignition) label printed on the plastic right below it. It will be a bright yellow 20-amp fuse that is offset from the other 4 or 5 in its particular row. Unplug it, and plug it into the first two holes so that it is in line with the rest of the fuses in that little row (undo its offset).

Now your cigarette lighter in the dash will be powered all the time. The best part about this fuse, is that when you place it in the "Always On" block, it frees up that previous accessory connection that you can use for another "Remote Wire" connection on something like an amplifier, since there isn't one coming off of the head unit on our stock radios.

I have the same radar detector and never had a problem. I leave it plugged in all the time without any issues. By the way this thing is a life saver. Plenty of times troopers were ahead around a curve and i was able to slow down and merge into the center lane without incident.

I have the Escort 9500ix like some others here and really like it. The GPS feature is especially handy and it does detect laser and everything else!

The laser is such a fine point, it hits where it's pointed. It's also point and shoot. Not left on to read as the cars come over the crest of a hill or around a corner.
It doesn't fan out over a distance when they are trying to get the speed of the cars ahead of you.
The only thing the laser part of the radar detector is good for is when you get hit.

Seriously. If you had 2 cars, side by side, 50 to 100 yards away, both with the same radar detector, the one that doesn't get hit might be lucky to pick up the signal.

When the laser goes off on any radar detector, it's too late. What it is good for is the Ka and other bands. Get a Valentine radar detector. Haven't had a ticket since I bought it a few years ago.

I agree...

Save your money ...snake oil.

Radar Detector? Really? What are you living in the eighties? Do police departments even have radars anymore?:scared:

If you get tagged by a laser, it's too late.

Back to the original post...your cig outlet is supposed to cut out during engine cranking! This is to save your electronic device during heavy current draw. DO NOT disable it.
BTW... My radar detector saves me often...snake oil...please. However, it must be used in combination with common sense and a bit of experience.:)

I think I entered programing mode on my detector. I am going to download a manual and adjust the detector. I ordered the Redline today it should be worth the 450. Is it safe to leave the detector turned on and let it go on and off with the car? If so it would be sweet. Can I run a spliter in the center consul lighter outlet so I can run my tom tom and my hand held CB on trips?
