I met this gent at a local cruise in a couple years ago. I had just bought my Challenger and didn't know diddly about Mopars. I see this awesome purple and black Challenger and walk over to take a look. He tells me about the car and it's a 1970 TA Challenger. I didn't appreciate what that meant then, but do now. Next thing I know the guy and his wife are inviting me and my gal to dinner at their house. Come to find out he has a collection of 1970 Mopars all restored. Two AAR Cudas, two Road Runners (one convertible #36 of 41), a couple Challengers, and he just bout a new 392.
He and I have gotten to be real close over the past two years and he's kind of adopted me. He's got a son my age, but the son has Down Syndrome and could never work on cars with him like he wanted and I guess I kinda fill that gap there. I've been helping him restore some of the project cars and it's been a blast.
He had one of the AARs up for sale, but decided to keep it and sell one of the Road Runners instead so he asked if I could come over and photograph the car for him. So Saturday I went over, did the photography and shot some video of the car so he can put it on Ebay. It's a 1970 Road Runner, PCP, convertible, and has A/C. All original including the white interior. This is the car that is in the Taylor Swift Video "Fifteen" and was featured in Feb 2010 Mopar Magazine.
So I get done with the shots and he says let's go grab lunch. Throws me the keys to the Road Runner and he hops in the passenger seat. I'm like no way....way too nervous to drive this car. He just sits there and says he's hungry let's go.
So I hop in fire up the 383 4bbl and we head down the road with the top down and eat at Sonic. Very cool to drive that old car, but dang the brakes were atrocious LOL. Drum brakes all around and no power assist. I'm talking both feet to stop this thing.
So we get back and he knows my favorite car of all the ones he has is this 1970 TA Challenger. PCP, black fiberglass hood with the scoop, TA stripes, wicked stance. All stock. 340 Six Pack motor. He throws me the keys to it and says let's go drive it. Dang I'm stoked. Hopped in, fire it up and off we go. I hit the road and he says "get on it" and man I stomped the loud pedal. Not near the power of my Challenger, but seeing that tach climb above 5,000 RPMs with the exhaust roaring from the slash cut pipes that exited under the doors was awesome. I felt like Mad Max driving that thing.
We get back from that and he tells me let's go drive the new 392. It's the blue with white stripe IE with 6 speed. Those cars are SO nice. Lots of torque outta that 392 and I'm glad I finally got to drive one. My Challenger is quiet from road noise and all that, but this one is SILENT. Handles excellent and drives very nice. I think Dodge did a good job with the tweaks. It can always use more power, but the motor is very healthy.
All in all a very good Saturday.
Here's a video I did up for him to use in his Ebay ad for selling the Road Runner:
