Hey guys, just recently picked up a slightly used (4k miles) 2018 Scat Pak Shaker 6MT. I love the car so far, and have had multiple camaro's and mustangs so not a stranger to some weird noises, but after driving the car hard today I noticed a slight intermittent ticking (sounds like the normal valve tick but was fading in and out every couple seconds). Is this normal? Its our first performance Dodge (we have had multiple jeeps). Thanks!

(edit- traded a 17 camaro SS for it, which was also noisy but the noise was a consistent tick)

Congrats on the beautiful ride:) That slight lifter tick is normal intermittently. A constant pronounced tick is a sign of a bad lifter. All Hemi's have intermittent ticks. Congrats again and welcome to the Dodge family.......

Welcome! But we can't hear this ticking without a video or audio of it.

Yea I was in a Taco Bell Drive thru so didn't whip the camera out, but it sounded like a Direct Injection tick just intermittent, and from the sounds of it it is normal, so not worried! got 4 years of warranty left. And thanks everyone for the compliments, I have had 3 mustang 5.0's and 4 camaro's (including 2 1LE's) and I have never gotten the attention this car has gotten.

A drive thru really magnifies engine noise. A car wash bay likewise. Or a garage.

If the noise is indistinct with no real source you can pinpoint probably normal.

Since the car is an unknown to you unless you have records and know the oil is fresh and of the right type my advice is to treat the engine to an oil/filter service. Oil with miles it makes for a noise (or noisier) engine.

Before doing anything drastic, verify it's not your exhaust manifold/gasket. That is a common reason for hearing a tick and often misdiagnosed for something internal.

Congrats on the new ride.

I have the same intermittent tick on my new Scat 1320. It’s no big deal. It comes and goes too. Only has 1200 miles.

Also, I Just had the oil changed. The car always made the noise.

It sounds like it comes from underneath. Like maybe from the exhaust. Now I’m a little OCD about it. Lol.

Just One time , it ticked/knocked kinda loud when I started it. After it was sitting for an hour, engine still warm. The noise went away after a couple seconds.

That never happened again. Even when I started it after the first oil change. It was quiet.

If you do end up getting this inspected by the dealer and need an additional layer of assistance while there, let us know.

It’s weird though. My engine is pretty quiet idling. And when I rev up in Park to 3-k RPMs.

But I hear slight ticking like through a drive thru or down an alley. It is different than just loud injector noise. What do you guys think?

I’m not gonna waste my time yet taking it to the dealership. They will tell me it’s normal. Which it probably is. Idk. Lol.

I had 42k miles on my previous 5.7, and now have 27k miles on my 392. Both engines had loud ticks going through a drive thru. The sound obviously is amplied, so the ticks sound loud.

It's my observation and IMO, the Hemi is a noisy engine. Not BMW or Toyota quiet.

I didnt and don't have this noise in the cabin with the windows up. Roll the window down for a drive thru, and it is noisy.

Never had any issues with either motor, and no oil consumption. No metal particles in the oil at change time either.

Again, I feel that the Hemi is a mechanically noisy engine, and have had zero issues crop up with either engine.

Probably what you don't want to hear, but just sharing my experiences.

Agree with the above post.

Although my 392 is definitely way more quiet than the 5.7L was it's by no means a quiet engine. In normal driving from the driver's seat I can't hear any noise or ticking but get next to a wall and you will hear it and this just seems to be normal.

Any constant rhythmic ticking I would say is not normal as is any noise you can hear from the driver's seat while driving.

The sewing machine sound is what I couldn't stand and thank God this 392 does not do it and hopefully never does.

Engine makes noise, the tranny makes noise, the diff definitely makes noise but they’ve all be going strong with regular fluid service intervals.

Big strong gears throughout not the quietest but definitely robust. If you pop the hood and theres ticking from what sounds like under the intake manifold its normal. Anything super loud or if you’re able to feel the tick, then thats the time to inspect further.

I had a 19 Scat Charger too. With the same 392 Hemi. It had a similar tick.

But not as bad or as loud as my Scat Challenger 1320.

I’m waiting to see if it gets worse before I take it in to a Dealer. I’m using the Pennzoil oil recommended and Mopar oil filter too.

I'll chime in here...I posted in another thread a concern about an RPM dependent ticking sound I heard last week. It is intermittent, and not that loud, and also sounds louder next to a wall, and yesterday I thought it was coming from both sides of the engine (faintly) at idle...and...with the many comments about hemi's being noisy I think I'm just hearing noises in the night and have nothing to worry about.

At least for now! Lol!

Avoid drive-thrus and alleys.

Up to you if you want to take the car to a dealer to have this noise listened to by a tech. And just because a tech tells the noise is normal doesn't mean it is not normal. Generally abnormal engine noises are pretty clearly abnormal. The engine just doesn't have the healthy sound of well, a healthy engine.

Engine "ticking" and similar complaints are very common and in most cases are *normal*. Especially with cars that are a bit more "raw" and intended to deliver a more visceral experience. I mean I suspect a Lexus, a M-B or even possibly a Cadillac owner has never heard the engine in his vehicle. But I know from my years of owning "muscle" cars and high performance sports cars the engines in these cars can be noisy.

My engine tick has gotten better. And it goes away sometimes. I think the engine is noisier as it breaks in. Is that common?
