Autostick or not, after I shift into 5th my Challenger feels and sounds like it has another gear it needs to be in (it's like you're in 4th and need to shift into 5th. It is a 2011 R/T auto. Thanks.

Never drove an 11, but my 10 R/T doesn't do that and I'm pretty sure the tranny is the same in the 2 cars.
Can't say that I have that effect on my 2010 R/T...
You must be feeling the lack of overdrive in these cars. Going from 4th to 5th gear does not drop the rpms that much. Thats why I have always said we got screwed on the overdrive gear. It needs to be a bit more steep.
Don't know much more than .83 you would want.
1st Gear-3.59:1
2nd Gear-2.19:1
3rd Gear-1.41:1
4th Gear-1.00:1
5th Gear-0.83:1
Reverse-3.16:1

Cruising at 70mph the tach reads 2200 rpm's (auto) which is higher than my other 2 vehicles. You will get used to it.

Well, since most of the rear wheel drive 4,5 and 6 speed autos out are in the .6 to low .7:1 range I would like that more than the crappy .83.
I personally don't think it feels like it needs another gear when in high but if you guys do than so be it.
It doesnt really bother me. I just got used to the Mustangs and Camaros I had cruising at 90MPH at 1800 RPMs. LOL
I'm not an engineer but my guess is they think to pull the extra wieght you need to be wound up a little tighter to compensate with road changes than the others. The OP wants to know if it feels like you need to be higher gear. I guess we'll never know, at least this year. When/if they ever put the 8 speed in then maybe we'll know.

I would have liked this a lot more for fuel economy thet the MDS thats for sure.

If that were the case, I doubt the 6sp manual would have gotten .50 6th.
I'm pulling the heavy beast under 1500rpm at 60mph just fine... and 2k is dam near 90mph.

Just saying...

Your also running about a 4 rear end and mines barely over 3. That might make some differance. I just aint buying that the engineers just set back and said lets piss these guys off and put a lower gear than is needed for the autos.
This is another one of those situations where "more" is not always better, even though the customer may think it is. After a certain point, you don't still gain magical amounts of mpg with a super steep gear. The mds + 2300-ish rpms is really not a bad pairing.

If you are running the full 8-cylinders, then you have no choice but to run the tallest gear you can tolerate to maintain good mpg. It's not like you get a 66% mpg benefit out of a 66% change in overdrive gear. Putting the same gear on an mds auto be pretty well pointless. The mds wouldn't pull it worth a damn, and it would just end up in v8 mode at the slightest provocation beyond level ground and a stiff tailwind.

I'm not even sure super low rpm is all that optimal for these "high-strung" hemi's, anyway, as far as getting the most out of a partially-filled cylinder. It's waaaay out of the range where good scavenging is going on, so some of that fuel is just sneaking from the intake valve right out through the exhaust valve during overlap, at such low speeds, since the timing/momentum is all wrong. On a wedge-head Chevy that is cam'd to better favor low rpm work, the tall overdrives make more sense. The same doesn't automatically hold true for the "free-flow through" design of the hemi that is cam'd to sing through the 4k-5k rpm range.

I'm on my 2nd 5 speed auto now and I never felt like it needed to shift up again. I like it the way it is. I can give it gas in 5th and it will actually respond. Not so much if it was a lower gear ratio.

I have said before I feal 2200-2400 rpm isnt ideal for highway mpg, so I to feal a 6th gear / overdrive would be nice for ~1800 rpm at 70 mph.

Be more specific, at what speed are you at what rpm, to make you feal you need speed 6? This way others can compare to see if they are seeing what you feal.
Mine seems happiest in the 2200-2400 range on the freeway, with or without MDS. Right around 75-80 MPH.
